The purpose of this memo is to provide you with updates regarding measles outbreak preparedness and response in Ontario and how these updates apply in Niagara. The Ministry of Health has released the following documents:

  • Ministry of Health Memorandum – Update on Measles Outbreak Preparedness and Response
  • Frequently Asked Questions – Measles Management for Health Care Providers

Measles Outbreak Immunization Strategy for Ontario

  • Based on current risk levels, Niagara has not been identified by the Ministry of Health as a region requiring enhanced measles immunization measures at this time
  • Health care providers should be aware of the outbreak immunization recommendations for patients who are planning to travel to areas where measles is of concern, either domestically or internationally
  • While MMRV can be used for outbreak and measles contact management purposes, we ask that MMRV be used primarily for routine or catch-up immunizations
