AssumptionTV - advice for parents and carers

Over the past few weeks, our College Community Liaison officer, Erin Petrucelli has been speaking with parents to get some advice about the way the College can communicate with families and to ask about how you’d like to be involved with the College. One item that is coming up regularly is how much parents appreciated the ‘parenting information evenings’ that we’ve held in the past. Whilst we work on building a few more of these into this year’s program, I wanted to remind you about the world-class program we’ve sourced for you – AssumptionTV.

AssumptionTV, found via the link on PAM, has dozens of episodes of clips from adolescent experts on many of the questions that parents find themselves wondering about, such as: parenting girls, parenting boys, resilience, mindfulness, online pornography, sexting, vaping, positive parenting, grief, cyberbullying and gambling. Leading Australian adolescent psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg has assembled experts in each of these areas and grouped the answers into FAQs that are responded to in short clips – they are engaging and interesting. Please take some time this week to browse the full library of topics and please let us know (via Erin or your LM) if there are specific topics you would like us to try and source an in-person speaker around.

    Mental Health First Aid

    Mental Health First Aid

In previous years, about one third of our staff have undertaken the Mental Health First Aid Course, which trains people to recognise the signs of strong and poor mental health and teaches how to give ‘first aid’ and help an unwell person seek professional help. Excitingly this year, we will have approximately one quarter of the student population undertake the Teen version of the course. Already, a number of our Year 12s are undertaking the program, and shortly all VCAL students will do the same. By the Term 3, all Year 8s will be participating in this significant learning experience.

Scared Heart Exchange - postponed in 2021

It's no surprise, I suspect, that we have had to cancel this year's Sacred Heart - Assumption College Student Exchange. Since family billeting forms the backbone of the experience, it is unreasonable to think that by mid-August our respective communities will be sufficiently vaccinated for the program to go ahead without fear that several families might be 'stuck' hosting a few extra teens for any number of weeks! Fingers crossed that everything is back on track so that the Exchange can go ahead again in 2022 (hosted in Adelaide).

    Forgiveness

One of the most challenging life skills we try to teach and embody in schools is that of forgiveness. The Restorative Justice framework we utilise now in education aims to help young people give and receive forgiveness and to experience others doing the same. The capacity to forgive is often seen as a weakness, but those of us who have experienced deep forgiveness, know that the fortitude of the person who has graced us with their forgiveness is an amazingly strong and admirable. Let us be that person for others:

Forgiving God, when we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we ask You to ‘forgive us, as we forgive’.  I know this is a dangerous pray to commit to, because if I can’t forgive, then I won’t see your peaceful forgiveness for myself. Let my heart embrace forgiveness then Lord. Help me let go of grudges and be free. Help me to ‘seek first to forgive’ with generosity, so that others aren’t bound by my pain. Give me wisdom to rise above pettiness. Help me build peace by encouraging others also to let go and forgive. Amen.

    CAREERS EXPO

Thank you to the hundreds of people who came along to our Careers Expo at Assumption College last week.

Our students didn't have to travel very far to connect with universities, TAFE and employer organisations. This huge event takes place on our College grounds and enables our senior students to ask questions, gain inspiration, collect guides and other career advice.

It was also wonderful to welcome so many parents and families to the event this year.
We hope the expo inspired and gave our students the information required to help you follow their dreams and make future decision
