To our customers, staff and friends,
A much beloved Muppet character, Kermit the Frog, is often quoted as saying “It’s not easy being green.” Well, we can concur with Kermit. It’s not easy but it certainly is worthwhile.
For as long as we’ve been a leader in waste resources recycling, we’ve talked about how to make our operations from coast to coast greener and more sustainable. We’ve built a LEEDs inspired MRF in Saskatchewan that helps to set the standard in using recycled content and energy efficient materials and systems. We’ve sponsored and supported community causes across Canada and Michigan that help people live healthier lives and to find excellent healthcare when they need it. We’ve steadily converted our fleet of collection trucks to cleaner-burning, quieter compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. By the end of the year, we’ll have more than 200 greener collection trucks and that’s just the beginning.
Now we’re taking on a big, new and very exciting role. Emterra is expanding our CNG fuelling stations from one location, in Winnipeg, MB to four. In a few weeks, we’ll open our second fuelling facility, which will be a fast fill station, in Chilliwack, BC and later this summer we’ll open a third in the Capital Region District, BC and a fourth in Mississauga, ON in the Greater Toronto Area by the end of the year. The Mississauga facility will be the largest of its kind in not just Ontario, but Canada. Our intent is not only to service our own fleet of CNG vehicles but also to encourage other fleet owners and operators to convert to greener vehicles by creating a network of CNG fuelling stations and their sister CNG-certified maintenance facilities across Canada.
The results will be lower vehicle greenhouse gas emissions, cleaner, more breathable air, and stable, predictable, and lower fuel costs that will be good for us, our families and our economy.
I hope you enjoy reading more about our CNG initiatives in this issue of ‘Terra Notes. As always we welcome your comments and questions.
