Focus on:
English for Kids

by Janet Birkmann

Let the little children come to me ... Matthew 19:14 (ESV)

"English for Kids" is a phrase you are probably very accustomed to seeing and hearing in conjunction with short-term missions in the OPC, but do you know what it means?

French-speaking families in Quebec actively seek opportunities for their children to learn to speak English at an early age. St-Marc's Reformed Church has specifically targeted this demographic with its "English for Kids" and "English for Teens" camps.

This summer marks the 13th year that these popular, Bible-centered, English-immersion camps have been organized and promoted by St-Marc's, where OP Missionary Ben Westerveld serves as Pastor.

Teams of volunteers from Reformed churches in Canada and the US lead the kids' camps in cooperation with local bilingual volunteers. All camp activities (songs, Bible stories, crafts) are conducted in English, and children are sent home with a careful French translation of the Bible lessons. The final day of camp includes a barbecue and performance to which the whole family is invited, and the church follows up with the families after the camps.

The week-long camping trip for teens provides plenty of opportunity for practicing English and learning about the Bible while leaders and campers enjoy classic camping activities such as fishing, canoeing, survival training, and of course, campfires!

Since the congregation of St-Marc’s cannot absorb the costs of the camps, they are delighted and encouraged by the support of sister churches and the various costs that team members themselves cover!

There are still openings for kids' and teens' camp leaders this summer! We highly recommend this wonderful opportunity to serve alongside fellow believers and share your faith with lots of enthusiastic children!

Summer Plans in the Czech Republic!

From the March 2017 newsletter of OP Missionaries Jerry and Marilyn Farnik:

"Preparations have begun for summer events here – the outreach English Camp (July 15-22) and the Biblical Counseling Conference (July 26-29) in the Šumava mountains, the mountain trip for youth to the White Carpathian mountains (July 31-August 4) and the Children’s Bible Camp (August 7-11) in Prague. We are thankful that both the English Camp team and Team Praha have been formed in the US and are now getting ready for these events, as well. We have given out many hundreds of invitations, but now it is important to pray that God would give people a desire to participate in the events and hear the Gospel."
