Like A Fishhook

I pulled a book out of my library last week by one of a handful of authors I return to, Philip Yancey. Where Is God When It Hurts still is a powerful treatment of the painful subject of human suffering. I went back through it, this time taking notes, given the front and center place the pandemic has bestowed suffering. Yancey quotes the novelist Peter De Vries, who “called the problem of pain ‘the question mark turned like a fishhook in the human heart’” (20). The snagging fishhook of Why?

The (Virtual) Tent 2020

The Junior High students from Ruth Murdoch would like to invite you to join us for our “Virtual Tent” meetings. They will begin Friday, May 22nd at 7:00 PM and run through June 2nd. The meetings will be happening every night except Saturdays. Please come and support our kids and invite a friend or family member to watch so they can get to know Jesus better. More information will be available in the upcoming week.

It feels quite strange to have Pioneer's Volunteer Engagement Committee—chair, David Nowack; vice-chair, Jim Ford; secretary, Heidi Ha; along with a score of Pioneer members—busily at work amid this pandemic lockdown from their homes. Phone calls and emails are going out to fill the nearly 600 volunteer positions. If you haven't heard from them yet, please prayerfully consider saying YES to the invitation to serve your home church this new year (July 1). The committee thanks all who have already responded. Why let a pandemic stop the advance of God's Kingdom at Pioneer?

Family, Faith, & Fun!

Now is a great time to start a nature journal. You could create one by yourself or together with your family. Include things like what trees and flowers are blooming, how many and what kinds of birds you see, what bugs you can find, and what the weather is like. You can also press flowers in your journal or insert tree helicopters, seeds, or leaves. You can sketch flowers or other things you find interesting and label them / write your observations, or take photos and tape prints into the journal. You can even add to your journal on days that you don’t make it outside. Find Scripture verses, poems, song lyrics, and quotes about nature that you can write in it, or write your own poem. Whatever you include in your nature journal, take the time to notice the details and wonder at the amazing things God has created!
