Autumn 2021Principal's Welcome Greetings! As I sit down to write today, the sleet is coming in sideways here in Kilmore and nearly every staff member and student I’ve seen this morning has grimaced, shrugged their shoulders and given the obligatory ‘another beautiful Kilmore day’ as they passed by. We recently added a beanie to the College uniform, and the yard is now a sea of light blue pom poms bobbing along over the classic blue school blazer as the students busily make their way to class to get out of the rain…the more things change, the more they stay the same! The Neale Daniher Community and Sports PavilionOur builders (Construct2) are now well underway on the Pavilion site and we are all getting excited about the prospect of the many uses the building will provide to our community when it opens later in the year. Donations are still coming in and the patrons of the appeal Ray Carroll and Simon Costa continue to encourage past students to make a donation and see their family name remembered on this important building. For those wondering ‘what’s next’ in our building program, we will soon begin work on a new Animal Studies/Agriculture precinct, be installing a new set of amenities to service the tennis, netball and hockey, and then undertake the restoration of Shandon House to revert it back to a welcoming Reception and Administration Centre. If any of these projects are of interest to you, our tax-deductible Building Fund is always open to accepting donations! Welcome ErinTowards the end of 2020, we farewelled Maria Cleve from the Alumni Office. Ree’s welcoming smile and energy for supporting our past students was a great gift to our College. She did terrific work building our database, supporting the ACKOCA and providing a friendly face to those who popped in for a visit. At the beginning of 2021, the College appointed Erin Petrucelli as our new Community Liaison Officer who will be supporting our alumni activities. Erin has had a successful career in Events Management, a strong link to our community and we look forward to introducing her to you in person. Marist Association of St Marcellin ChampagnatThe Marist Association is a new movement in the Catholic Church open to all people who feel the family spirit of connection to the Marist story. Over 800 Australians have joined the Association and enjoy the spiritual and social connections it brings – most are the past students and current staff of Marist schools, although increasingly, others have been drawn in. The Association works through local groups (the group here in Kilmore has about 40 members, and the one in Melbourne around 100). The groups meet semi-regularly to get to know each other, to share Marist prayer and reflection and to work for social justice and community events that support young people in need. If the Association is something that might be of interest to you, have a look at the website for more information (there are local groups all over Australia that you could connect with) or watch this short introductory video: Celebration of the Centenary of the AGSVThe events to commemorate last year’s celebration of the centenary of the AGSV have largely been shifted into 2021 and we look forward to sharing this important occasion with you as the year progresses. Our own ACKOCA will be hosting a celebration of Assumption Sport at a gathering in August, to which you are all invited. We look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible, to gather and celebrate our sporting history and to support the great work of ACKOCA in keeping our stories, relationships and traditions alive. Breathe...The theme across Marist Schools Australia this year is ‘Breathe the Spirit of Life’. The invitation to take a moment and pause, to breathe, to reflect and renew has been extremely welcome following the tumultuous experiences of 2020. There are some beautiful resources provided to schools to assist us to open this theme for staff and students and a number of programs and events that are open to the wider public – we’d love to see you get involved! Quae Supra Quaere. Always. Kate Fogarty 2021 ALUMNI EVENTSBr Dougie's LunchFebruary 26 was a special day as many attended the Annual Br. Dougie’s Lunch at St Andrews Hotel in Fitzroy. It was wonderful to see so many committed to keeping the Assumption spirit alive and wanting to revitalise their connections. Thank you to Sam Cummins and Simon Costa for all of their work to put the lunch together. Country Catch UpOn April 24 a rowdy group of ACK Old Collegians gathered for the annual 'Country Catch-Up' in Deniliquin. It was a great day of sport and conversation allowing many a great opportunity to catch up. 2021 REUNIONSDo you have a reunion coming up you would like to get happening? Get in touch so we can help get the ball rolling CELEBRATING OUR ALUMNIOld Collegian Glenn Aldridge (Class of 1994), is currently undertaking "Liam's Ride" to raise awareness for Cardiovascular Disease for Old Collegian Liam Cummins Liam’s Ride is an annual event covering varying lengths of the National Trail stretching an incredible 5330 kilometres from Healesville in Victoria to Cooktown in Queensland. The idea was born when Liam Cummins, a fit man in his early 40s, died suddenly from a heart attack leaving behind his beautiful wife, young family and countless friends he gathered through his life. In Australia, a heart attack occurs every 10 minutes making it the leading cause of hospitalisation and death in our country. Forty per cent more men compared to women die from cardiovascular disease, making Liam’s story familiar to far too many. Understanding the signs of a heart attack could save your life or that of someone you love. Liam’s Ride aims to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease and to help prevent other families from experiencing the same devastation as Liam’s. This event has evolved from his passion to complete the trail and now the desire of the people he left behind to complete it in his memory. More details on the cause and the ride can be found HERE Please share with your friends and come along for the ride. Together we can spread the word and help saves lives. Throughout May, Zac Pettit (Class of 2014) is raising funds and awareness for Osteosarcoma. In memory of Zane Collier (2014) who passed away from Osteosarcoma, Zac has created a Non for profit organisation T2KO, to help create a better understanding of the disease and hopefully give kids a fighting chance. He is running Ultramarathons every Sunday, with the second of these run on our own Carroll Oval on 10 May. Congratulations to Tyson Barton, (class of 2016) who rode his maiden race as an apprentice jockey on Saturday 27 February at Alexandra. Go Ferrando ridden by Tyson Barton and trained by Jody Thompson won on the day. A fairy tale start to his jockey career. We congratulate Chloe Molloy (Class of 2016) on her terrific AFLW achievements! Chloe was named on the 2021 AFLW All-Australian Team, as well as named as Captain for the 22 Under 22 team! Chloe has said: “All-Australian is such a humbling achievement and I’m very grateful that football was back this year. It brings me a lot of joy and others. Thank you to all those who support me and to ACK for their support of me” Georgia Comte (Class of 2015) received the 2021 Hansen PhD scholarship in history at University Melbourne.
