NZSO-RNZ Concert-SOUNZ Recordings 2016

This key SOUNZ project, in partnership with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Radio New Zealand Concert, produces new recordings of orchestral music for public broadcast and online streaming. The 2016 recordings will take place over three days in February, which will be the only session for the year.

 
 

SOUNZ is calling for submissions of orchestral scores from SOUNZ composers, Affiliate or Fully-Represented. The submitted scores will be reviewed by a panel consisting of representatives from the participating organisations and CANZ. More info at SOUNZ online...

An application is available at SOUNZ online... Entries close Monday 20 July.

 
 

Queen’s Birthday Honours
Congratulations to Dr Philip Norman, who was appointed to be a Companion of The New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to music and musical theatre.

Also congratulations to Mrs Bronwen Holdsworth ONZM, appointed to be a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (DNZM) for services to business and the arts, Mr Trevor Daley and Associate Professor Rae de Lisle, who were appointed to be Members of The New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to music, and the following recipients of The Queen's Service Medal: Dr Elizabeth Sneyd and Craig Michael Utting for services to music education, and Olga Stancliff,for services to music.

 
 

Last Saturday, for the first time, taonga pūoro (traditional Māori instruments) were featured in a solo concerto role with symphony orchestra, when Christchurch Symphony Orchestra​, with soloist Ariana Tikao, presented the world premiere of Ko te tātai whetū (Concerto for Taonga Pūoro), composed by Philip Brownlee in collaboration with Ariana. Also featured in the concert was Lissa Meridan’s a quiet fury.

There's been plenty going on in the NZ jazz front. Recently, the jazz community around the country has been meeting to discuss forming a NZ Jazz Federation to support home-grown jazz. You can read a report on the development of NZ Jazz Federation at SOUNZ online...

The Wellington Jazz Festival took place for the fifth time this year and was "heating up the cool capital with 100 gigs in five days", including plenty of NZ jazz in the mix.

New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest District Rounds are also done, to be followed by Regional and National Finals. You can check out the results so far here, including winners of NZ Music Awards supported by SOUNZ and CANZ.

 
 

Wallace National Piano Competition brings together New Zealand's best young pianists, competing for prizes, including one offered by SOUNZ for the best performance of a NZ music piece. The Grand Final takes place in  Auckland on in July.
