RC. Your child loving learning! No Images? Click here Dear Families Thank you for accomodating the student fee days, last week. The time was well-utilised by College staff, with several different professional learning opportunities scheduled across the period. We do trust the extended break provided an opportunity for a mid-term breather, for both students and families. On behalf of the College Parent Collective (PC), we hope families have registered for the upcoming Bush Dance; it is fun and relaxing way for families to connect. The flyer is included at the end of this communication. Thank you Regent College
Our Mother's Day Morning Tea We enjoyed making gifts for our Mums Luckily we had fire fighters to put out the fire! KG1KG1 students loved participating in the discussions (sustained shared thinking) about their Mum, listening to stories about Mums, then making a card and gift to be presented to their Mum during our Mother's Day Event. It was an exciting time for the children, and I'm sure for the Mums, when the children sang a song then spent time with their Mum sharing food and participating in activities. To top it off, the weather was glorious! Our ongoing building project came to a stop when it was time to move to our new classroom. We all stood around the building in our old classroom and discussed what we were going to do with it now that we were moving. We discussed the route to our new room, then realised it wouldn't fit through the door! The children estimated that we would need to cut the building in half to get it through the door, then they gave suggestions of where we should cut it, and why. It has been sitting in our storeroom for reconstruction, we brought the walls out into the classroom last week but unfortunately it caught fire! Luckily, we had several fire people (who had made their own fire extinguishers) nearby who were able to put out the fire, but not in time to save our building! We will continue to learn about more people in our community over the rest of the term. Ros Greaves. Teacher KG2We have been continuing to enjoy our topic of community helpers. Last week we were lucky enough to have one of our parents come into our class and discuss their role in the community! It was so nice to learn about a different profession and how they help in our community. In literacy, we have continued to focus on clapping, jumping and patting out the syllables in words. We are getting very good at counting the sounds! We also love to read and are beginning to identify and generate some rhyming words. Mrs Stein has been so amazed at some of our beautiful art work. The children have worked so hard to create a community vehicle. The children research, using the e-board, chose the colours and shapes to use to create their amazing creations! Make sure you come and have a look! Courtney Stein. Teacher Learning about our community workers KG3Our Term 2 theme, "Community Helpers" has been well-received by the children. We've been enjoying interesting conversations, such as one recently led by the children - "the importance of Fire fighters." Students even constructed their own fire engines out of various materials. It was also a timely visit from Constable Care, informing the children on how to respond in an emergency situation. This visit led to further classroom discussions about police and medical response teams. The children were able to recall the important steps to take when faced in an emergency. The children have also enjoyed the movement between the new outdoor and indoor spaces. This has allowed for more creative and imaginative play. Margaret Gokavi. Teacher PP1The Pre-primary 1 class recently went on their first River School adventure! As part of the Pre-primary Science and HASS curriculum, the class used an investigative and explorative way to learn about science, history and geography. This term for River School the class is learning about living things and have been searching for bugs. On our first day at the river we went on a bug hunt, and recorded what we found using photographs. We had some of our Year 6 River Ranger Cadets to help us along the way. There were many other exciting things that we found along the way, such as jellyfish. This has peeked our interest to investigate further back at school. Melanie Baker. Teacher Our cultural adventures have continued to include cooking and tasting, along with a visit from Lillie’s mum who taught us about Korea. Eliza’s mum and grandfather came to share with us about Chinese culture and Chinese calligraphy. PP2PP2 is a hive of activity! The Butterfly Project is well under way and our tiny caterpillars grew into fat caterpillars. They are now all safely transformed into chrysalis stage and we are awaiting their exciting metamorphosis into beautiful butterflies. At River School, we searched high and low for insects of every kind. The ants were very busy, hunting and gathering. We saw hundreds of them, large and small. Jo Coffey. Teacher Our cultural adventures have continued to include cooking and tasting, along with a visit from Lillie’s mum who taught us about Korea. PP3The last few weeks in PP3 we have explored the cultures of Korea and Sri Lanka! We had Mums and Dads visit our class and share information about their culture. It was very interesting! Each country we explore, we learn about their native animals, flag, language, food and some traditional clothing! We learnt a lot about Korea. Some of our friends were amazing mini teachers who taught us Korean phrases, the alphabet and traditional Korean games! This week we focused on Sri Lankan culture and learnt a lot about the weather, special animals and food! For Art we drew peacocks, which is a special bird in Sri Lanka. We also played some fun traditional games with spoons and limes. We had such a fun time learning about Sri Lanka! Next week we’re off to the Philippines and Vietnam! Hayley Beath. Teacher
1.1We have been continuing our learning in year 1 about the local community. In week 4, we were faced with rain on our excursion day, so we changed our plans and had an incursion instead. We were very lucky that our parent helpers stayed to run mini community workshops at school. We visited a car dealership, a bakery, a florist, a post office, a café, a building site and a cooking class. We all had a fabulous time! The following week, one group was presented with a block challenge: the task was to build a community that met the needs of two community members who were preparing for a birthday party. The group spent time over 2 days building and refining their community and were so excited to share their work with Miss Shaw. Our final task was to create a community building out of a paper bag. Some of the buildings we made included a bakery, houses, hospitals, an airport, a school, hotels, a pizza shop and a swimming complex. We then set up a community in our classroom and practised giving and following directions to get from building to building. It was a great way to integrate Mathematics, Literacy and HASS into our topic! Lauren Shaw. Teacher 1.2As a part of our investigation into communities, Year 1 have been going on a number of walks around Victoria Park. We visited DOME, where Miss Jongeling each gave us $1 to buy a babycino, Vic Park Central where we went on an eye-spy hunt, we posted a letter at Australia Post and ate recess at Read Park. On another day we walked to G.O. Edwards Park and Lake. Here we draw parts of the playground, sketched the lake and of course, played on the playground. A special thanks to RiverView for letting us stop there and use their facilities. To apply our new experiences and knowledge, everyone worked in partners to design and make a community place out of a paper bag. It has been lots of fun! Vanessa Jongeling. Teacher 2.1Block Play We have been blessed with our common space and have made the most of it. The students have been very keen to play with the blocks again. After reading a book about an emperor and his kite, they were challenged to design and build a palace for the emperor and his private garden. First, the students individually designed and recorded their own ideas. Next, shared their ideas in teams, and finally produced their designs. It was pleasing to see the students cooperating, negotiating, asking questions, offering ideas, taking risks and using some math language. Each group successfully completed the task. Science Investigations In Science, the students had to explore where air can be found. Every student was given a plastic bag and went on the oval to collect air. They were surprised at how easily it was to trap the air inside the plastic bag; a simple investigation to demonstrate that air is everywhere. Our next experiment the students put a tissue inside a clear plastic cup, turned it upside down and placed it into a container of water. Again, the students were amazed at how the tissue was dry and learnt that air takes up space. Tracey Jenkins. Teacher 2.2It has been all about kites in Year 2.2 for the last few weeks. We learnt about different kites in the world, we read a beautiful Chinese story about a boy and his special kite, we wrote our own story of “The Flyaway Kite”, we made our own kites, we flew our kites on a windy day and finally we learnt poems about kites. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed all the kite-related activities which each covered Mathematics, Science and Literacy. In Mathematics, we explored 3D shapes with various hands-on activities such as constructing 3D shapes with straws and match sticks and recognising 3D shapes from everyday objects like boxes, containers, block pieces, pencils etc. We continued to learn about push and pull in Science and were all very excited to combine with Year 2.1 to complete some experiments. The most interesting part was when the students were encouraged to change the shape of a ball of plasticine into a shape that would float. They were all immensely excited when they found a way to turn the sinker into a floater. Min Chi. Teacher learning our EduDance item running laps for fitness and maths
3.1Along with arrival of Term 2 in Year 3, comes the anticipation of NAPLAN tests. For some that brings a sense of trepidation and for others, feelings of excitement about the challenge and a chance to prove themselves. Wherever they fell in that category the class of 2022 proved themselves worthy as they took on the task responsibly and with self-respect. We are proud of their efforts and the manner in which they conducted themselves, displaying respect to their classmates and the College staff involved. We all await the results in several months, but as far as I am concerned they are all winners already. In Mathematics we have continued to explore the times tables and related division facts. Sometimes in fun and creative ways and other times in simple memorising tasks. We have also combined fitness and Maths with running laps, taking our pulse and recording the results after a rest period. In a few weeks we will graph our data to see if our fitness levels have improved. Deanne Johnston. Teacher
4.1In year 4 we have been learning about continents that lie between the same lines of latitude as we do in Australia and seeing some similar natural features found in them. South America has the Amazon rain forest, Africa has the rain forests of Madagascar and in Australia we have the Daintree rainforest. Zac has shown the Southern cassowary bird and the Burrawang palm found in the forest. In health we have been discussing how to remain positive when we face challenges in life and Lalitha drew her shield depicting her strategies. Mrs Walton came to chat to our class about her job - an oral hygienist. She taught us so much about looking after our teeth, the names of our different teeth and their jobs and how much sugar is found in drinks which was so shocking to us all. She also emphasised how important Maths and English played an important role in helping her to do her job well. Wendy Innes. Teacher 5.1The Year 5 students have been very busy over the last few weeks! We have been learning about the history of the Swan River Colony, also known as Perth. We’ve investigated the reasons why various colonies in Australia were established, and how Perth was a bit different than most. We have learnt about how the Indigenous Australians managed the land, and how the landscape has changed over time. We practised some cartooning skills in order to represent our findings in History in the form of a comic strip. We have also written a historical narrative from the point of
view of one person living in the Swan River Colony. Sarah Wills. Teacher 6.1The year sixes in River Rangers have been learning simple knot tying and in teams, they had to build huts using the knots they learnt to tie. We also had a discussion about the basic tents from the early pioneers of Australia and the types of huts that the Aboriginal people used to build. They also learnt more about physics and what makes a strong structure. They soon learnt that the strongest structures have triangles in them. The students came up with some very interesting looking huts. They learnt that sometimes the biggest structures, although they might look good, are not necessarily strong. For Art, the students have been looking at different modern artists. We have studied the works of Picasso, Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp. We have also had a discussion about Cubism and Pop art and the students have drawn some of their own Pop Art and Picasso style art work. They have come up with some fabulous fruit designs and self-portraits. Janice Lotsos. Teacher ICT Year 3 students are learning about Cyber safety practices. They discover which types of information would be OK to share online, and which types should be private. They determine differences between needs and wants in keeping their system safe, to learn how to create a strong password to protect their online identity; all the while they are building a Cyber Budde robot. Jay Saxton. Teacher LANGUAGES - ITALIAN There was lots of speaking, listening and writing in Italian this term. The year ones worked on their booklets and thoroughly enjoyed writing and illustrating in Italian about mum giving them a vegetable they didn’t like. The Year two’s worked on translating a week’s weather forecast in Italian. The Year three’s and fours created booklets about their family and their routine. The year six’s finished off their topic of free time with a role play where they acted out a dialogue of a group of people talking about what they like to do in their spare time. Signora Kerrigan MUSICDo you know that music and culture are very closely tied together? Our students have been experiencing the different musical styles and practices from different countries and in different contexts. Our Year 4 students have learnt that how people paddle canoe in sync through songs. Year 1 students are exploring the musical behaviour and practices when welcoming guests in different cultures. Some cultures welcome guests through singing, and others through dances. We also explored the instruments people use to make music at that time and talked about how each element make every culture unique in its own way. Our Year 2 students continue to explore improvisation on their instruments based on a song and circle game that we have learnt recently. Students enjoyed playing in the background as the rest of the class get involved in singing and in the circle game. Joey Wong. Teacher SPORT This term in Physical Education the year 1 classes have shown an improvement in their station activities. Some of the activities include round ball, obstacle courses, pencil roll and soccer kicking. Years 2-6 have been playing modified tennis games working on their forehand, backhand and volley shots. Lauren French. Sports Teacher Car seat safety: Are Australian children safe? Many Australian children are not travelling in the safest restraint or position of the car, according to new findings from The Royal Children’s Hospital National Child Health Poll. Two thirds of children (63%) aged seven to 10 years travel in an adult seatbelt without a booster seat, even though the majority of these children are below the recommended height to safely use an adult seatbelt. WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN PROGRAM Not every school can collect earn & learn stickers because they do not have a local Woolworths store. This year Regent College is helping a remote school receive new equipment by collecting earn & learn stickers on their behalf. If you would like to help Wongutha CAPS school which is a member of Christian Schools Australia, please send your earn & learn stickers to administration.
