These are a great opportunity to learn more about your state and local government. See details in calendar and look out for a meeting near you!

Town Hall with State Representative Ana Hernandez- Wednesday, August 19
Town Hall at Riverwood Estate Civic Club- Thursday, August 20
Legislative Town Hall at Castillo Community Center- Thursday, August 27
Rail Safety Community Meeting- Monday, August 31

SUMMER FEEDING PROGRAM

School children across Harris County are approaching the end of their summer break, but there are still many children struggling to meet their daily nutritional needs. This does not need to happen, especially in a great state like Texas. For families who count on school breakfast and lunch, please be mindful that youth 18 years and younger can, and have been, receiving free summer meals at numerous locations throughout our community. Local partners provide the locations and staff to serve up to two meals a day. Families can find a site by visiting www.summerfood.org, texting FOOD to 877-877 or calling 211.

COMMUNITY BREAKFAST WITH COUNCILMEMBER ROBERT GALLEGOS

On Saturday, August 29, I will host a community breakfast with Councilmember Robert Gallegos. This is a great way to interact with your fellow neighborhood leaders and to discuss issues important to the community.  We will meet at 8:30am at Doneraki’s Restaurant located at 300 Gulfgate Mall. Please RSVP by calling (713) 386-5390, or emailing RSVP@lillieschechter.com. Hope to see you there!

MESSAGE FROM SYLVIA

August marks the 50th Anniversary of the passage of Medicare and Medicaid, two landmark laws that forever changed healthcare the United States. Besides Medicare and Medicaid, President Johnson’s “War on Poverty” resulted in dozens of laws that focused on helping struggling Americans, but unfortunately many in our country still are affected by poverty today; especially in Senate District 6. I work to pass laws that will help alleviate the effects of poverty, but it will take an effort from all of us to help the most vulnerable in our community. So if you have some spare time, volunteer at your local food bank, with your church, or any organization that helps the poor. We must never give up the war on poverty.

Putting People First,

Sylvia
