During the AMO conference, Niagara Region delegates met with key provincial ministers to advocate for several pressing issues facing Niagara. These priorities included securing funding for a new south Niagara wastewater treatment plant to support planned population growth throughout the region, seeking joint investment in affordable housing plans and physician recruitment activities, and advocating for more child care spaces to meet the growing needs of Niagara’s workforce, among others. In addition to meeting with seven ministers and parliamentary assistants, Regional Chair Jim Bradley also represented Niagara Region at a joint meeting of the Mayors and Regional Chairs of Ontario and the Ontario Big City Mayors’ Caucus to discuss priority issues facing municipalities across Ontario, including the homelessness crisis, municipal budgets and financing, and gaps in infrastructure funding.
Over the coming months, Regional Council and senior staff will continue to engage with provincial staff and ministers to advance many of the projects and initiatives discussed at the conference. Later this fall, the Region will also host Niagara Week at Queen’s Park to continue these conversations and highlight other Niagara-specific priorities with key provincial decision-makers.
