Paint Tricks & Tips from Interior Designer Bill Musso
Painting can be one of the least expensive and most dramatic ways to update a room. Before grabbing a brush, consider the following paint tricks and tips offered by Bill Musso, principal at Musso Design Group, and get the most out of your colorful investment.
TIp One -Dark colors actually cause walls to recede, making the room seem larger. When considering a dark color for a room, lighting will be the key to achieving a successful look – make sure there is enough of it available whether through windows or light fixtures.
Tip Two - Interested in painting an accent wall? This can be a neat trick to draw attention to a certain focal point like a bed or at the end of the hall to emphasize a piece of art or sculpture. Bill suggests opting for a derivative color of the other walls in the room, and go at least two shades lighter or darker.

This fall Bill expects the trend of saturated color to continue with rich colors like emerald, Mykonos blue, coffee and steel gray. For spring, look for a return of chartreuse, pale grays and soft lavender.

More Paint Tips
TIp Three - For moulding, painting the trim the same color as the wall in a different sheen can offer subtle nuances. Use a flat or eggshell paint for the wall and a semi-gloss or gloss for the moulding. To emphasize mouldings, go for contrast and consider going darker rather than the standard white.
Tip Four - Keep leftover paint to use for future touch-ups. Seal the can as tightly as possible, and it should last for years. When discarding old paint add cat litter until all liquid is absorbed and double bag. Be eco-friendly and call your local waste management for proper removal.
