CEP interview on mediation in the Czech Republic

From 23- 25 September, CEP and the Probation and Mediation Service of the Czech Republic will jointly organise a conference focused on the use of restorative justice during probation, the use of mediation between offender and victim during the criminal proceeding and counselling, and the support and cooperation for the victim within the probation service. As a warm up for this conference, CEP asked Ms. Čádová,  Director of Probation and Mediation Service of the Czech Republic, to tell something on the views and daily practices of mediation in the Czech Republic.

Jailhouse Islam – What to do with terrorists in prison?

Together with our partners  of the Criminal Justice Platform, CEP will organise a conference on radicalization in Barcelona on 14 October. One of the speakers is the  International Center for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) – The Hague. ICCT, in cooperation with the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) conducts projects, research and training courses focused on the rehabilitation and reintegration of violent extremist offenders in prison.

Liesbeth van der Heide, who coordinates the Centre’s activities on the rehabilitation and reintegration of violent extremist offenders, underlines the importance of a transition from ‘security first’ to a more rehabilitation-oriented approach in the prison regime.

Electronic surveillance launched in Latvia

Latvia has been actively working on the implementation of electronic monitoring and starting from 1st July this year the first inmates will be able to apply for early release from prison sentence with electronic monitoring. The technological solution selected is the radio-frequencies-based technology to control the location of a person in a specific place, while the introduction of electronic monitoring based on GPS technology is not intended so far.
