First XI The First XI travelled to Taranaki to play Francis Douglas Memorial College in our traditional Two-Day fixture. In the shadow of Mt Egmont our boys played some incredible cricket. Losing the toss our hosts chose to bat on a pitch which looked like it would be tough to bat on last. We bowled and fielded well, with the pitch offering little assistance, and at lunch FMDC were 105 for 5. We stuck to or task impressively as our opposition batted well, maintaining our standards for 98.4 long overs. Jesse McIntyre was the pick of the bowlers taking 5 wickets, while James Wilkinson picked up 3, Angus Jaspers took only a solitary pole, but tied up an end for long periods with his nagging lie and length, and George Parke impressed on his return to the side taking 3 catches. We finally dismissed FMDC for 289 leaving us a daunting 24 overs to negotiate after six long hours in the sun. International sides are often found wanting in this situation so to be none down at the close was a monumental effort by Jake Jonas and Alfie McIntosh. Our openers picked up where they left off in the morning before an excellent piece of bowling dismissed Aflie for 31 with the score on 72. Jake Jonas continued his stellar form crafting 82 before being bowled by a delivery that shot along the ground. Andrew Taylor, having wicket kept all the previous day now came to the fore. An innings of skill, control, patience, and sheer mental fortitude earned him just rewards with his first century at this level. Batting round him were several other innings of note, particularly Willie Matthews and Flynn Register, both learning quickly about two-day cricket were watchful in defence on a pitch now offering lots of turn and variable bounce, but also capitalised on the short ball. Andrew Taylor after his heroic innings The boys showed magnificent resilience batting for over 103 overs and in doing so amassing 297 runs to take first inning bragging rights and a drawn match. The draw was sufficient to retain the Francis Doulas Memorial College Rathkeale College Cup.
