CCC Student Connect -- SSCCC Monthly Newsletter

DECEMBER 2019

President's Message

Greetings Students!

As we reach the end of the semester and the year, I would like to share with you what the SSCCC has accomplished to date and what is next.

At the beginning of my term, I sought to ensure students knew who we are and what we do. Here are some of our accomplishments to date:

  • This semester the Board of Directors and Executives visited and engaged with students at five colleges including Long Beach City College, Merritt College, Reedley College, San Diego Miramar College, and Santa Monica College;

  • We partnered with the California Community College Student Affairs Association to engage students in the fall and to increase participation in our caucuses during their annual Student Leadership Conference;

  • We re-established our commitment to bringing back the March in March (see below for more information);

  • For the first time ever, we are collaborating with the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges on their June Leadership Training in June 2020. During this event, local ASO leaders will receive training and be given an opportunity to collaborate and work with their own faculty leaders;

  • We re-established our part in the coalition with the California State Student Association and the University of California Student Association to continue the campaign to #FixFinacialAid;

  • In October, we successfully lobbied for the $2 Student Representation Bill, AB 1504 (Medina), which was signed into law by Governor Newsom and will provide the SSCCC with millions in funding to be used for statewide advocacy, and organizational stability and much more; and

  • We will be introducing the SSCCC legislative priorities in the state legislature next year at the beginning of the legislative cycle.

As you can see, we have had many accomplishments this semester and we are only getting started. Subscribe to our Listserv and join us in our efforts to make real change! Click here and volunteer to serve on one of the statewide governance committees. In addition, if you would like the SSCCC to visit your campus, contact us and let's talk about how we can engage your students!

On behalf of the SSCCC Board of Directors, we wish you happy holidays and a happy new year!

Best Wishes,

Danny Thirakul, SSCCC President

If you are not interested in running for an executive position, you can still participate in the elections process. Find more information about the elections process and the application here.

Keynote Speaker

We are pleased to announce that we have identified one of our keynote presenters.  Dr. Lande Ajose is the Senior Policy Advisor for Higher Education for Governor Gavin Newsom. She is responsible for developing and shaping the Governor’s higher education policy agenda, which is focused on protecting college affordability, preserving college access, and increasing system efficiency in order to meet the state’s need for a skilled and educated workforce.  Come to hear the governor's vision for the future and let your voice be heard by sharing your experiences with her.

MARCH IN MARCH IS BACK!

The SSCCC brings back the student March in March! If you are not familiar with the SSCCC March in March annual event, you can check out the 2011 March at this link. As you will read in the accompanying article, thousands of students came out even in the rain. Our theme this year is “Student Voices Hold Power!” Join us as we show the legislature the power of our voices!  Watch for more information forthcoming via our next newsletter, our listservs, and social media.

SSCCC CAUCUSES

The SSCCC is actively recruiting students to participate in its seven caucuses (Abled, Asian Pacific Islander, Black, LatinX, Spectrum, Student Trustee, Veteran, and Women).  During the CCCSAA Student Leadership Conference this past month, the SSCCC caucuses were re-energized and will begin meeting in the next few months.  If you are interested in participating in any of the caucuses, you can signup via the SSCCC website here.  For more information, please feel free to contact the Equitable Practices Chair Tariq Azim at EquitablePractices@studentsenateccc.org.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

We are seeking volunteers to serve on SSCCC Shared Governance Committees.  This is your opportunity to serve at the state level without making an extensive commitment since some committees meet only two or three times a year.  If you are interested in serving on any of the shared governance committees listed below, please visit the SSCCC website "Serving at the State Level" page to learn about the appointment process and to access the application.

  • ASCCC Educational Policies Committee
  • ASCCC Open Educational Resources
  • Accessibility Standards Workgroup
