Social Notes from Vice Commodore

“If You’re In Town…Come On Down!”

That’s our battle cry for this first weekend in July.  Or it’s a call to arms, a cry for help or something like that.
Here’s what coming:

July 4th:  Parade:

At the Sequoia Yacht Club Area 51 Site, workers have been toiling in a dimly lit warehouse assembling the most garish amalgamation of stage paint, glitter and hot melt glue ever to roll down the highway.  This moving display of questionable taste has a cast and the search has stretched far and wide to recruit only the most talented of actors.

And it will be ready to go for the Redwood City Fourth of July parade.  If you and your family and friends are around come and watch the parade and cheer for our float?  A brilliant idea!

July 4th:  Later that same day at the Club:

David Jackson and team are working hard to present the Founding Father’s Feast lunch between 2 and 4 pm.  It will be a classic lunch of hot dogs, potato salad and the fixings.   For a nominal cost you and your family and friends can enjoy lunch on our warm, sunny deck and wait for fireworks at dusk.  Another brilliant idea!

Then we rest briefly.

July 5th:

Westpoint Regatta 2014/ Island Time Party:  The day will start slowly with the arrival of the volunteers to help set up the party.  The anticipation will build as we know the race has started off Treasure Island.  It will down shift into party mode once the first fast boats arrive.  And by the time the first drinks are finished and the rest of the competitors arrive, the place will be jumping.  Maybe over 200 people.  Wow.

Do you think we might be able to use your help for a bit of time and then urge you enjoy the drinks, food and music?  You bet.  That’s the brilliantest idea yet!  There is plenty of space to sign up at the club.

You all can take Sunday off…

Quickly jumping to the rest of the month:

On July 19th we will have the Delta Time Party.   There will be live music.  And this happening in just the nick of time too as our Delta Cruise will be a scant 10 days away.

July 28 through August 1st - Delta Yacht Club:  Thirteen boats have signed up as of this writing and there is still room – but not too much.  There is also a provision for blacktoppers.  I see a couple of new members on the sign-up list and I would encourage others to come see this unique place and treasured club tradition.

Thank you for supporting your club and enjoy your summer!

PK Sailing in 2014 SSS Transpack

Just wanted to share this exiting news with all Sequoia YC members, letting you know that one of our own club members Przemyslaw Karwasiecki is taking part in the Singlehanded Sailing Society (SSS) 2014 Transpack.

Przemyslaw or as we know him Przemek or PK started the 2014 Transpack race this past 28June from   Corinthian YC and is racing on board his sailboat PoGo 2, S/V Libra to reach the beautiful Hanalei Bay, Kauai, Hawaii – a distance of 2,120 nautical miles…alone. To get ready to take part in the Transpak  Przemek completed qualifiers: Around the Channel Islands in 2013, and race from Newport Beach to Guadalupe Island and back earlier this year. Last week he was working feverishly on Libra to make sure all systems were checked and ready to go.

All of us at Sequoia YC wish him God Speed, favorable wind and following seas. For those interested in following Przemek follow the link - http://sfbaysss.org/shtp/tracker/ or http://yb.tl/shtp2014

More information about the race and participants can be found at:

The sailboat that is his home for the next three weeks is PoGo 2 an Open Sailing 650 class racer. More info about the boat, specs can be found here:

New Members' Corner

New members often ask about the duties of the different Commodores in our club. All the positions are described in the club by-laws - you can find a copy at the end of the Club Roster. But here's a little primer to help you understand the commodores' postions and responsibilities. This is just an overview and not meant to be exhaustive.

The Rear Commodore sits on the Board and is responsible for all the on-the-water activities of the club. This includes all cruise-outs and races plus managing South Bay Opening Day and the Delta Cruise-out. She/he appoints all the fleet captains and is usually  nominated for the Vice Commodore position the following year.

The Vice Commodore also sits on the Board and is responsible for all House activities. This includes events like parties and drop-in-dinners plus house rentals and maintenance.He/she appoints house and bar managers and manages the Club Steward and staff. The Vice Commodore officiates in the Commodore's absence and is usually nominated for the Commodore position the following year.

The Commodore presides over Board meetings, executes all contracts on behalf of the club, and appoints non-elected officers and most committee chairs. The Commodore is responsible for the health and growth of the club, enforces the club by-laws and rules, and is subject to directions of the Board. He/she is the official representative of the club for all outside activities and communications and is usually nominated for the Staff Commodore position the following year.

The Staff Commodore sits on the Board and counsels the Commodore - usually with a sigh of relief after 3 busy Commodore years!

If you have any questions about these positons, just ask one of the Commodores. They'll be happy to help you out.
