Lifting Loneliness: Social Connection Project helps isolated older adults

A moment of winter sun outside the Seattle Aquarium. The GSC organizes group outings that use public transit to explore the city.

The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the pre-existing problem of social isolation, particularly among older adults. Given the statistics on isolation’s negative health impacts, the Greenwood Senior Center started the Social Connection Project last year. “Our goal with the Social Connection Project is to engage, educate, and—just as importantly—learn from the community about the impact of social isolation on older adults,” said GSC Director Cecily Kaplan. “The project is particularly focused on inclusion, resource support for isolated elders, LGBTQIA+ elders, and elders affected by memory loss. We see this as a new vital part of our senior program.”

Mission Moments

Windermere Real Estate Greenwood volunteers help at the Greenwood Senior Center with spring cleaning and PNA Village Junk Haul Day

Thank you to the Windermere Real Estate Greenwood volunteers who helped the GSC and PNA Village with spring cleaning and our Junk Haul Day on June 10! The volunteers picked up 8 truckloads of stuff to donate and 2,800 pounds to dispose of from 25 PNA Village households! They helped clean and reorganize some of our storage areas at the Phinney Center, too. It was wonderful working together to help our neighbors!

Three pics, two of makers and artists with their booths featuring art and cake during the PhinneyWood Art Sale & Stroll, as well as two makers smiling and holding a corgi.

Our PhinneyWood Art Sale & Stroll brought together almost 80 local makers and hundreds of shoppers for a handcrafted shopping experience on June 18. We love supporting artists, building community, and welcoming summer with this fun annual event! Missed the stroll or looking to reconnect with a maker you met? Explore this year’s Makers & Artists List to find their work online, and check out our blog to see more photos!

Craving more local art and handmade goods? Our Winter Festival & Crafts Fair is on Dec. 3 and 4! Artists and makers, it's time to apply if you'd like to showcase your work at this beloved neighborhood tradition. Applications are due by Aug. 21 so apply today!
