MEDICAL ADVISORY: Heightened Disease Surveillance for Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games

The Canada Summer Games begin on August 6 and run until August 21. With over 5,000 participants and more than 20,000 spectators expected, the potential for health events such as infection spreading or injuries occurring is significant. Mass gatherings such as this have historically been associated with outbreaks and transmission of infectious diseases.
Heightened Surveillance
- Public Health will be monitoring for potential disease outbreaks associated with these mass
gatherings
- Heightened surveillance will occur from July 24 to September 2, leading up to and following the Canada Summer Games
- Surveillance will include
- Clusters of food/waterborne illness
- Reportable disease trends
- Potential outbreaks
Reporting Requirements for Health Care Providers
- We request your assistance in reporting diseases of public health significance that may relate to the Canada Summer Games
- These diseases must be reported to the Medical Officer of Health under Ontario Regulation 135/18 and amendments of the Health Protection and Promotion Act
