JPC Key Message Week 4, Term 3 2020
75th Anniversary
of the end of World War II
Victory in the Pacific (VP) DayTomorrow, 15 August, marks the 75th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War, when Victory in the Pacific was declared. VP Day is sometimes referred to as VJ (Victory over Japan) Day and commemorates Japan’s acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender. For Australians, it meant that the Second World War was finally over! Over one million men and women served during WWII, abroad and at home. Australia came under attack for the first time during the air raids on
Darwin, Broome and Northern Australia and with the midget submarine attacks in Sydney Harbour. Australians fought in campaigns in south-east Asia and the Pacific and we commemorate their efforts in the Pacific to protect our country. Often referred to as one of the greatest generations our country has ever produced, these men and women lived through WWI (or were born just after it), grew up through the Great Depression and then served during WWII. Some were unlucky enough or brave enough to have served in both wars. My own Dad was one of that great generation, serving in the Pacific alongside our allies. And like many of that generation, never spoke of the war and so his stories were never told. But his memory and
the memory of all our brave vets live on, for as long as we continue to remember and honour them. The Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) has commissioned a special radio series 75 days, 75 stories sharing one story a day from a veteran, widow or someone on the home front in the days and the episodes can also be accessed
on the DVA website. As part of the 75th Anniversary of the end of WWII, JPC is asking for the names of any relatives who served during that campaign. Please send their information to vicki.walsh@cg.catholic.edu.au by the end of August, so we may acknowledge their service. Lest we forget. Vicki Walsh, DSM
Remembrance Day 2020Do you have a relative who served in World War II? We have a special installation for Remembrance Day this year and we will be honouring and remembering our JPC family members who served in WWII. This is open to all JPC
families and to all Nationalities. Please send through any relevant information you know about your family member, including: - Their name
- Rank if known
- Service
- Dates served
- Date of death (if killed in action).
Please send to vicki.walsh@cg.catholic.edu.au
Moderation DayThursday 20 August 2020

Students from Years 7- 12 are encouraged to use the day productively to work on learning tasks, assignments and general study. Students are discouraged from visiting 7-10 High Schools or Primary Schools, as their presence
can prove very disruptive to the learning of these students. Thank you

Theatre ThursdaysThis week, students joined “Theatre Thursdays” – a lunchtime drama club! Each Thursday lunchtime, students will participate in a variety of Drama games and activities to develop their confidence and presentation skills, creative thinking and collaboration. An eager group of students from all year levels attended the first lunch time club and engaged in different games. Students walked the ‘red carpet’ and presented silly caricatures to entertain the audience. The energy was high and the enjoyment was real! Look forward to our next session! Mrs Sarah Smith and Miss Kat Allan

Work Experience ReviewLast week Keira was on a 4-day work placement at Verve Chiropractic in Crace. “I had an interest in doing something similar to physiotherapy and my parents had been to this chiropractor before. I
enjoyed everything but in particular, I enjoyed how well I got to know the patients. The patients told me about themselves and the stories they had and it was really interesting. This placement was extremely valuable to me, I found out through this placement that I really enjoyed the week of being a chiropractor. I learnt so much about what is like being a chiropractor and also things they needed to know, by the end of the week I was helping by being a second pair of eyes to see what Emily needed to adjust.” Keira O'Connor, Yr9
If you are interested in doing work experience, forms can be found here. You will need to submit completed forms 2 weeks prior to the work experience occurring.

JPC Community Council NominationsSt John Paul II College has achieved some significant milestones over the past 8 years including reaching a total of 902 students. As part of the evolution and growth, we are looking for interested parents who
would like to bring their expertise, commitment and passion to provide continued success to St John Paul II College. The College Council was established in 2013 and has made a significant contribution over this time. The Council is seeking to fill a number of vacant parent positions and ask all parents to consider how they may contribute to the College and nominate themselves to join the Council. The College Council is your way of having a say in how the college operates and providing the College with ideas and feedback across all areas of operation. The Council is actively involved in guiding the development of the Catholic identity and character, approving governance structures and finances, ensuring
the College is meeting its obligations to the parent community and working to build networks and relationships to support the College in the achievement of strategic goals. Mrs Stephanie O’Meara and the Leadership Team in conjunction with the Catholic Education Office are responsible for the day to day operation of the College with the Council providing a governance structure, similar to that of a Board for a corporation. Working with Mrs O’Meara who is the public representative of the school, the council has responsibility for providing feedback and making decisions on behalf of the school community in relation to areas such as: - Supporting the development of the Catholic identity, ethos and mission of the school.
- Supporting pastoral care strategies in the school community.
- Promoting the school in the local community, supporting the engagement of parents and providing feedback in relation to curriculum, activities
and operational matters.
- Developing, approving and monitoring the annual budget, including school determined levies, loan commitments and the fees collection and remission policy.
The Council meets approximately every 6 weeks between 5.30 & 7.30 pm – Council members will also contribute to activities outside meetings in support of College activities – these are not onerous. If you would like to nominate yourself for a position on the Community Council please submit your nomination form to Mrs Stephanie O’Meara via Kris.Davis@cg.catholic.edu.au by 11 September 2020.
