5th Week Classes

The 5th week classes are not part of the regular series, and will have to be purchased separately. They're exciting because we can learn some special stuff!

Level 1 (8:15pm)

Shim-Sham Intensive
w/ Olivia & Justin

Everybody SHIM SHAM!  More popularly known as the tap dancer's anthem, swing dance ambassador, Frankie Manning, is well known for instilling a non-tap version in the lindy hop community.  Play a proper song in any dance venue in the world, and you'll see dancers of all levels break apart to perform this iconic solo routine.  We'll cover the ENTIRE ROUTINE in one fun, intensive session.  And guess what?  IT'S FREE!

Level 2 (7:15pm)

There and Back Again: How to End a Dance
w/ Carla & James

We spend so much time thinking about what to do during the dance, that we rarely talk about the beginnings and ends.  Come learn great patterns to start your dance on the right foot (pun intended!) and fancy dips to make sure your partner comes back for more!

Level 3 (7:15pm)

JAMS. The Final Frontier
w/ Olivia & Justin

A crazy song comes on, the dancers form a circle, and we're all holding our breath: this is the arena that separates the performers from the watchers.  Jams have a long history in the lindy hop community going all the way back to the "cat's corner" where particularly skilled dancers showed off their artistic expression and newest tricks to onlookers.  We'll show you how to get into a jam, teach you jam etiquette, how to make the most of being in there, and then how to get out again!

Elective (8:15pm)

The Stew. (It's Mama's)
w/ Lori & Hanah

A short, fast and furious warm-up used by Whitey's Lindy Hoppers gained wide popularity through performances by Mama Lu & The Parkets.  Mama Lu was a force in recruiting Harlem city youth and exposing them to the positive influences of dance and the general joyful culture of lindy hop, jazz and swing.  Lori and Hanah will challenge your endurance, technique, speed and skill with this exciting routine, usually danced to the fastest songs on the dance floor!

May Series Begin

Level 1 (8:15pm)
8-Count Basic Lindy Hop
w/ Katie & James

When you really want to dig that swing beat, there's nothing like 8-count lindy hop!  We will start with the basics, from zero dance experience on up, and get you swinging around the dance floor in no time!  This is a progressive 4-week class; show up on the first week to get maximum benefit.

PRE-REQUISITES: None. No partner required; just bring your enthusiasm and comfortable clothes!

KATIE O'NEILL & JAMES YEH

HANAH YENDLER & ELIOTT GRAY

Level 2 (7:15pm)
Charleston
w/ Hanah & Eliott

Add some pizzazz to your Charleston by kicking and double-kicking our way through "airplane" charleston, Hand-to-Hand moves, Hack-saws and Kick-Throughs.  We'll even make the magical mix of Charleston Swing-Outs to really get you flying through those swingin' beats!  This is a progressive 4-week class; show up on the first week to get maximum benefit.

PRE-REQUISITES: Execute a swingout, lindy circle, charleston and 6-count moves and transition between them in open and closed positions. No partner required, just bring your enthusiasm!

Level 3 (7:15pm)
Connection
w/ Angela & Paul

In this social dance of ours, it is our connection with our partners that makes it MAGIC. In this series, you will learn to play and move with connection, to listen actively to both leads and follows, and how to use that connection to build increasingly complex and great feeling dances.

PRE-REQUISITES: At least nine consecutive months of Level 1 and Level 2 including one full year of social dance, or discuss your eligibility with instructors. Under-qualified students will be asked to transfer to Level 2 in order to strengthen their fundamentals.

PAUL SCONKA & ANGELA LEE

DOUGLAS MATHEUS & CRYSTAL NAKATSU

Elective (8:15pm)
Balboa Fundamentals
w/ Crystal & Doug

Originating in the Balboa Peninsula of Orange County, Balboa combines intricate footwork with smooth body movement, to create a dynamic and fast-paced dance that is fun to watch but even more fun to do! For everyone who wants to learn – or revisit – Balboa fundamentals, this four week series will get you up to speed with basic vocabulary and connection techniques, and get you out on the floor dancing Bal socially. We'll be covering the basic Balboa rhythm and core Pure Balboa and Bal-Swing figures.

PRE-REQUISITES: None. No partner required; just bring your enthusiasm and comfortable clothes!

Next Week - Live Music with
The Cosmo Alleycats

THE COSMO ALLEYCATS

We’re excited to welcome back the Cosmo Alleycats! They are a San Francisco dance band that brings to the stage a potent mix of vintage dance music with a dynamic, soulful delivery.
