The EU funded project Prisons of the Future looks into the possibilities and trends for the future of prison and probation practices. “But before answering the question of what we are aiming for, we first need to know where we stand now.” Ciska Joldersma, Project Leader of Prisons of the Future,  outlines the current landscape of prison and probation and what realistic dreams we may have for 2050.

CEP interview: Jana Špero: "Beware of PTSD when dealing with former soldiers in Croatia"

Jana Špero, head of the Croation Probation Service

Croatia has quite a lot of former soldiers with PTSD. They need a special approach from the Croatian Probation Service. The war in former Yugoslavia ended almost twenty years ago. "But the wounds are still there", says Jana Špero, head of the Croatian Probation Service. "We have come to the conclusion that people with PTSD need a different approach than our other clients."

People in probation: stories from the practice

“He must live somewhere anyway, so let him live here”

“Last week it happened again: a bunch of kids were messing around his house. They kicked against his door and made comments about abusing children. I asked those kids to stop bothering him, it makes him anxious and suicidal.” As a COSA volunteer Margaret and her husband are the linking pin between their new neighbour and the community. Which is not appreciated by everyone.

Ireland: Cross-Border Criminal Justice Seminar

Launch of the Community Return Programme Evaluation Report

Minister for Justice and Equality, Ms Frances Fitzgerald TD and Northern Ireland Minister of Justice, Mr David Ford MLA opened the fifth annual Cross-Border Public Protection Seminar held in Dublin on Friday 21st November 2014. The Seminar themed "Working with and in Communities" showcased the wide ranging co-operation between criminal justice partners, North and South.
