ACTIVITIES: images and updates from HHH and RGM As detailed in our previous bulletin, the "Homotopy harnessing higher structures" programme has now begun. The first of its workshops took place from 2-6 July and was extremely well attended - with Seminar Room 1 reaching its full 110-seat capacity throughout all five days. If you did not have the opportunity to attend, or would like to watch any of the talks again, recordings of the great majority of talks that took place can be found here. At the time of writing, INI is also hosting a two-week follow on workshop to 2015's "Random geometry" programme. Youthful and diverse in its make up, recordings from this exciting return of a highly stimulating programme can be streamed via the following link. 2. REFURBISHMENT: work begins on Benians Court refresh Work began this week on the long-anticipated refurbishment of INI's Benians Court properties - a project first proposed in 2012. This exciting new redevelopment will involve the comprehensive update of 24 apartments, all of which are regularly used to house INI visitors and participants. Of those flats, 16 will be altered to contain two double rooms with en-suite facilities, with improved kitchen facilities and standardised quality throughout the furnishings. The remaining eight apartments will receive a similar level of updates, however two of them will be fully renovated to ensure complete disabled access whilst four will keep a configuration better suited to housing families. The project will take place in four 3-month phases, with the aim of completing all works by July 2019. 3. PROPOSALS: programme proposal submissions deadline approaching As part of our recent refresh of newton.ac.uk, we have updated our "Submit a proposal" page. Those wishing to organise their own mathematical research programme at INI will find all the relevant information via the link above. For ease, we now ask that all proposals are made online through our site. The current biannual deadline for proposals is 31 July 2018. 4. TRIBUTE: in memory of Professor Mila Nikolova INI staff and participants both were greatly saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Mila Nikolova, following a brief battle with cancer, in the week beginning 18 June. Mila was not only Research Director at Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) but also Microsoft Fellow, Simons Fellow, and long term participant (August to December 2017) on the recent INI programme on Variational methods and effective algorithms for imaging and vision (VMV). A full tribute from her friend and colleague Carola-Bibiane Schönlieb follows via the link below. |
