NZ Bio Forestry has its origins with a group of New Zealand Māori and has been co-developed by innovative business leaders from New Zealand, Taiwan and Singapore. The plan is to develop a new frontier bio-economy in New Zealand from forestry biomass. We believe 7-10 facilities can be developed in NZ over 20 years beginning with the first from 2020/23. The objective is to replace petroleum and fossil-derived products. Starting with PLA (from waste/residuals) for food services and packaging, we also see further value in converting waste streams from this process for bio-adhesives, bio-extracts, bio-materials and bio-fuel. We are proponents of a Green Economy and indigenous models. We plan to create new capacity in state-of-the-art manufacturing, and new R&D
capability. We secured technology rights and partnerships from Taiwan for the NZ and Australian markets.
BUSINESS MODEL
NZ Bio Forestry does not follow the standard forestry business model in New Zealand. We are a consumer insight and technology business. We design solutions, analytics and innovate. This proposal is to develop a fully-integrated business around a technology platform that specialises in creating value in three areas:
- Converting forestry biomass waste (Pinus radiata) into high value products including alternatives to petroleum and fossil-derived products – using non-food source
- Optimising use of the whole forestry
biomass to create and sustain a competitive business through a single integrated processing eco-system, generating multiple revenue streams from wood.
- Generating relevant analytics from the initial New Zealand business to illustrate the value proposition and underpin a global licensing/franchising or other such commercial arrangement.
STRATEGIC SHIFT
NZ Bio Forestry sees trees beyond structure and fibre. With our partners we plan to deploy a circular bio-economy that harmonises bio-chemistry, bio-extracts and bio-materials with siviculture, forestry and wood processing.
