South Bay Championship

Photos By Fabian Pease

It was a beautiful day in the South Bay for the 13 boats, 7 in the spinnaker division and 6 in the non-spinnaker division for this two race format series. The Championship brought out boats not only from Sequoia Yacht Club but also racers from Coyote Point Yacht Club. This was also the first race for a several new boats to the Sequoia fleet, Dan Lockwood's Catalina 36ii, Ohana, Tim Petersen's, Catalina 320, Sea Breeze, Jenny Thompson's Wilderness 30, Wildy and Frank Wooten and James Brown's Farr 30, Pneum Addict. The only problem was very light wind leading to two wind delays for the first race. After 30 minutes the wind reached the minimum 5 kts and the racing started into the end of the flood tide. The Championship has a different format from the other series races as it is intended to be as much of a windward leeward race as possible with the ever shifting winds in the South Bay with the same course used for both races. Based on the wind direction before the first race course 2 from the SIs was called. This course is: start (adjacent to mark 3) to mark S then downwind to mark Y and back to finish between marks 3-4. The winds stayed fairly constant but never above 8 kts. The course did hold true even after the wind delays with a good up wind leg to mark S then a relatively downwind leg to mark Y followed by a close reach back to the finish. The fast spinnaker rigged sport boats made quick work of the 3.32 nm course. Unfortunately for some boats in the non-spinnaker division despite their best efforts the wind slackened on their downwind leg and they did not make it to the finish within the two hour time limit.

Once the fleet regrouped the second race went off without delay at 15:15 with a now building ebb tide changing the tactics to get to mark S from looking for tide relief to using the current to make quick work of the first leg. The wind stayed in the 7-8kt range so both divisions moved quickly through this relatively short course. The maxmimum wind observed was 10kts, oh the joys of Winter like conditions.

For the first race, congratulations in the spinnaker division 1) Magic, Jeff Phillips and Mike Reed, Express 27, 2) Pneum Addict, Frank Wooten and James Brown, Farr 30 and 3) Pizote, John Ryan, Santana 30. In the non-spinnaker division congratulations to 1)  Pole Cat, Dan Doud, Wylie Cat 30, 2) Iowa, Rick Dalton, Hunter 380 ,and 3) Ohana, Dan Lockwood, Catalina 36ii

For the second race, congratulations in the spinnaker division to 1) Magic, Jeff Phillips and Mike Reed, Express 27. 2) Wildy, Jenny Thompson, Wilderness 30 and 3) Pneum Addict, Frank Wooten and James Brown, Farr 30. In the non-spinnaker division congratulations to 1) Pole Cat, Dan Doud, Wylie Cat 30, 2) Iowa, Rick Dalton, Catalina 380, and 3) Ohana,Dan Lockwood, Catalina 36ii.

Racer’s Ribs, 2013

Last Saturday Sequoia Yacht Club hosted the South Bay Championship.  It was a light wind event with a very good turnout.  Just in case it is not mentioned elsewhere in this column, the Spinnaker Division was won by  Mike Reed and Jeff Philips on Magic and Non-spinnaker was won by  Dan Doud on Pole-Cat.  That same evening we handed out the racing awards for 2013 at the annual Racer’s Ribs dinner.

It was a fantastic event and I would like to thank a number of folks who made this racing season happen.  First off, I would like to acknowledge the Fleet Captains; John Ryan, Richard Butts and Rick Dalton.  Their vision, ideas and detailed management of our race schedule assured fairness and fun for all.  I am very grateful for their efforts.

Tim Peterson, apparently an unpaid intern at Latitude 38, publicized our program.  Just today, a photo and story of our South Bay Championship appeared in the ‘lectronic Latitude.  Thank you Tim.

As far as the Ribs dinner, I would like to thank Ron and Theresa Howard for decorating the dining room for the event.  The checkered-flag racer theme evoked many smiles.

Lena and her kitchen staff served a terrific dinner of ribs and fixin’s.  They also overcame the obstacle of my thinking we would only have 30 dinners served.  They responded brilliantly to our 60 guests.  Their efforts are very much appreciated.

It has been a great year for racing on the South Bay and I would like to thank the racers themselves.  I learn on every race and this year, I was especially pleased to see so many new faces, new boats and new members.   I know the plans for next year are developing well and I look forward to our time on the water together.

Coat Drive - October 25 - November 2

As the weather turns cooler and winter is around the corner Theresa Howard is working with 2 shelters in Redwood City as the place for clean and gently used men, women and children's coats that are donated by our members.  A bin will be put in the club by this Friday.  We would like this for only a one week period, October 25 through November 2..

If you join us for the Drop-in-Dinner on November 1st you can bring it then.

Thanks for your cooperation and thoughtfulness as we continue to reach out to our community.
