1. Blending plant up and running

Story
Story

When road builders talk about pavement, they’re not talking about a footpath.

They are referring to the mixture of compacted rock, sand and cement that lies under the seal. It is these layers that carry the weight of traffic.

We’re building a special type of pavement on this project called Hi-Lab. This pavement includes lots of large rock (65mm and 40mm), with just enough finer gravel, sand and cement to bind those large rocks permanently in place.

Hi-Lab blend can't be blended and transported to site because road vibration causes the rock and finer material to separate.

To make Hi-Lab, we’ve assembled a relocatable blending plant on site near Lake Road, imported from France. This will blend the components for pavement construction in the north. Later, the plant will be broken down and relocated as pavement construction moves further south.

2. Horsham Downs Road has closed

Horsham Downs Road closed to through traffic at 6am on Tuesday 9 October 2018 for bridge construction. The new bridge will take Horsham Downs Road over the expressway.

The closure has been timed to coincide with the reopening of Kay Road, to ensure motorists have an alternative route in and out of the city.

Excavation and construction will take up to 14 months. The road will reopen in late 2019. Originally the closure period was expected to be 9 months. This has been extended to 14 months because the bridge building methodology has changed.

The closure location is just north of the Borman Road intersection (near the old chocolate factory). During the closure, access to properties along Horsham Downs Road will be maintained at all times, but there will be no vehicle or pedestrian access through the bridge site.

3. Kay Road Bridge opens to traffic

The Kay Road Bridge opened just days before Horsham Downs Road closed, to ensure residents and motorists have an alternative route in and out of the city.

At 18.8m high, this is the tallest bridge on the Hamilton section. The photo shows project staff joining with representatives from Waikato-Tainui at the bridge blessing prior to opening.

4. Big dig under Matangi Road Bridge

The dig-out under the Matangi Road Bridge has begun, along with excavation of the expressway to the north and south.

This bridge was built 2m above ground. The excavation will go down 5m to achieve the 6.1m clearance from the underside to the road surface.

South of the bridge, the expressway will reach a maximum depth of 11m as it travels through the southern gullies, then rise back to ground level near where it ties back in with SH1 at Tamahere. Click the photo below to see the dig-out in progress.

5. Planting takes a break

Our planting team has almost completed its work for the winter season, with 160,000 plants in place and 490,000 more to be planted over the next two winters.
