Reserve Bank appointments ![]() Economists Carl Hansen and Professor Prasanna Gai have been appointed to the Reserve Bank Monetary Policy Committee, Finance Minister Nicola Willis announced today. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is the independent decision-making body that sets the Official Cash Rate which determines interest rates. Carl Hansen, the executive director of Capital Strategic Advisors, replaces Peter Harris who retires from the MPC at the end of March. Professor Gai, the Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Auckland and Head of the Departments of Economics, Accounting & Finance, and Property, replaces Caroline Saunders who is retiring at the end of June. Passage of major tax bill welcomed ![]() The passing of legislation giving effect to coalition Government tax commitments has been welcomed by Finance Minister Nicola Willis. “The Taxation (Annual Rates for 2023–24, Multinational Tax, and Remedial Matters) Bill will help place New Zealand on a more secure economic footing, improve outcomes for New Zealanders, and make our tax system fairer,” Nicola Willis says. The bill, which passed its third reading today, restores interest deductibility for residential investment property, reduces the bright-line test for residential property to two years and removes depreciation deductions for commercial and industrial buildings that were reinstated by the previous government as part of the economic response to COVID-19. The bill also provides for parents to receive government contributions to KiwiSaver contributions while they are on paid parental leave so long as they continue to make contributions themselves. ![]() Lifting economy through science, tertiary sectors ![]() Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Judith Collins and Tertiary Education and Skills Minister Penny Simmonds today announced plans to transform our science and university sectors to boost the economy. Two advisory groups, chaired by Professor Sir Peter Gluckman, will advise the Government on how these sectors can play a greater role in lifting New Zealand’s productivity and economic growth – and ultimately help all Kiwis get ahead. Science and Technology Minister Judith Collins says improving the tertiary and science sectors is part of the Government's plan to rebuild the economy and get it working for all New Zealanders. “The new Science System Advisory Group will help us explore the well-documented issues facing the science sector. There is a proven link between science and innovation and economic productivity, so it is critical the sector is operating efficiently,” Ms Collins says. “We will bring about the changes needed to ensure the science and higher education systems are well-placed to deliver maximum benefit for the country. ![]()

Innovative Earthquake Safety Solution by Global Seismic Data ![]() In Aotearoa, earthquakes are a part of our daily reality, and the safety of our buildings is a concern for everyone. Understanding this, the dedicated team at Global Seismic Data has made significant strides in earthquake preparedness with their cutting-edge Structural Health Monitoring System™ (SHMS). Utilising their proprietary SeismicDataSensors™ (SDS), this system is a game-changer for building and homeowner safety. Installed within structures, these sensors actively record and analyse data during seismic events. This crucial information is then swiftly relayed to engineers for near-real-time evaluation, enabling them to assess a building's safety post-earthquake and determine the necessity for further inspections. The benefits of the SHMS are multifaceted. It facilitates quick decisions regarding building occupancy, minimises the economic impact of business downtime, and prevents unwarranted evacuations. Moreover, it enhances decisions related to life safety, aids in coordinating emergency responses, and supports Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA) compliance, reinforcing a culture of safety and preparedness. Under the leadership of CEO Steven Mclauchlan, Global Seismic Data is not resting on its laurels. The company is persistently innovating, adding new features to their systems, and expanding their reach both domestically and internationally. This commitment not only showcases their dedication to technological advancement but also positions them as a beacon of innovation in earthquake safety.
