1. #SummerMathsPuzzles : our school-holidays-friendly project has wrapped up, but the brain teasers live on via our website.

Throughout the month of August we were excited to run our #SummerMathsPuzzles initiative on newton.ac.uk.

The Institute would like to offer a sincere thanks and congratulations to all those that took part in solving our daily doses of non-trivial brain teasers - your efforts have been inspiring and impressive in equal measure.

But never fear if you are only just discovering the 23 entries that made up this mammoth challenge. You will find each one of the puzzles available via the link below in perpetuity. We hope that they continue to bring joy (and frustration) to you, your families, friends and colleagues.

2. PROGRAMMES POSTER: a comprehensive guide to all our 2020 programmes and workshops is now available for download.

Each year the Institute produces a free-to-download .pdf file detailing the programmes and workshops due to be hosted in the forthcoming year. The 2020 edition has now been finalised and can be accessed via the link below.

3. PODCASTS OF THE MONTH: a triology of podcasts in this edition, ranging from the Wiener-Hopf to environmental science via a "golden age of maths communication".

(above) Dr Anastasia Kisil of the "Bringing pure and applied analysis together via the Wiener-Hopf technique, its generalisations and applications" programme.

The INI podcast series continues to grow in output and reach, with three new episodes added throughout August.

All of those detailed below, and more, are available to stream via the link. Those that use iTunes - or any podcast app which draws from its database - should also be able to find and subscribe to the "Isaac Newton Institue Podcast" via their search functions. We hope you enjoy the conversations, exchanges and insights within.

> Episode #14 "A Golden Age of maths communication", an interview with Professor Chris Budd
>
Episode #13 When mathematicians meet environmental scientists, an interview with Professor Paula Harrison and Dr Martine Barons
>
Episode #12 Investigating the Wiener-Hopf technique, an interview with Dr Anastasia Kisil

4. ATIYAH EVENT: "Sir Michael Atiyah: Forays into Physics" to take place at INI on Friday 25 October 2019.

Please see below for details of an event celebrating the works of INI founding Director Sir Michael Atiyah, due to take place at the Institute on 25 October 2019.

We are pleased to announce a 1-day event: "Sir Michael Atiyah: Forays into Physics"
(Friday 25th October 2019, Isaac Newton Institute, Clarkson Road, Cambridge) to celebrate Sir Michael's contributions to physics.

Lectures will start at 11.15 and end at about 5.00. Coffee/tea/biscuits will be available from 10.45, and a sandwich buffet lunch will be provided.

Confirmed speakers are:

Sir Roger Penrose: "Michael Atiyah's roles in the drive towards a twistor theory of
physics"
Nigel Hitchin: "Gravitational instantons and cubic surfaces"
Paul Sutcliffe: "Solitons and points"
Matilde Marcolli: "Anyons, networks, and codes in geometric models of matter"
Nick Manton: "Skyrmions"

This meeting is on the Friday before the memorial service for Sir Michael at Trinity College Chapel, on Saturday 26th October at 2.30pm. We have been informed by Trinity College that participants at our meeting will be very welcome to attend the memorial service. Unfortunately, we cannot help to arrange overnight accommodation.

If you wish to participate in the meeting, please register by completing the google form https://forms.gle/neZL8MqEEzrkoAuY7 . Registration is free. For reasons of space, the number of participants is limited, so early registration is advised.

5. TEACHING MATHS EVENT: "Supporting postgraduates who teach mathematics and statistics" to take place at INI on Wednesday 16 October 2019.

The Institute is once again proud to be hosting the event: "Supporting postgraduates who teach mathematics and statistics". Please see below for more details and a registration link.

As this event is aimed specifically at those in the early stages of their careers, we would encourage those reading this message to forward its details on to any relevant individuals or groups within their networks.

In conjunction with the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (Cambridge) the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications is delighted to announce that it will again be offering two free one-day workshops for postgraduate students who teach mathematics and statistics.

The two identical one-day events will cover issues such as planning and preparing for teaching, facilitating problem solving classes, encouraging participation and providing support, and assessing student work and providing feedback. One of the sessions will allow participants to discuss any issues, challenges or concerns they may have in relation to their teaching duties, and to allow an opportunity for them to seek solutions both from fellow delegates and the session facilitators, both of whom are experienced higher education teachers of mathematics from the University of Birmingham.

6. VIDEO INTERVIEWS: two new videos featuring INI programme organisers now available to view.

Above: "Geometry, compatibility and structure preservation in computational differential equations" organisers Arieh Iserles (Cambridge), Elena Celledoni (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) and Elizabeth Mansfield (Kent)

Below: "Mathematical and statistical challenges in landscape decision making" organisers Peter Challenor and Peter Cox (both from the University of Exeter)

Our series of video interviews with INI programme organisers continues to expand. Please click on the images above or the buttons below to view the two latest entries in the collection in which we explore the themes, ambitons and achievements of the "Geometry, compatibility and structure preservation in computational differential equations" and "Mathematical and statistical challenges in landscape decision making" programmes.
