I’m delighted to open this month’s mailshot, hot off the press, with the news that Holbeck Ghyll last night won Silver in the Small Hotel of the Year category of the revered VisitEngland Awards for Excellence.
We faced some extremely tough competition from the very cream of the nation’s hospitality crop – not least from the beautiful Gidleigh Park, which won Gold - and being shortlisted alone was a great achievement. We were judged on everything from our “outstanding customer service” and “commitment to excellence” to the quality of our food, green initiatives and staff training and the award is testament to the hard work and dedication of my team, day-in, day-out.
In other news, we were delighted to read the Mail on Sunday’s endorsement of Holbeck Ghyll the other day. In a feature about Holbeck Ghyll Frank Barrett, the paper’s esteemed travel editor, described it as “probably the Lake District’s finest hotel”.
Due to find out if this is true is Matthew Short, from Stafford, who won our recent Mungo & Maud competition to enjoy a luxury stay as well as £500 to spend with the fabulous dog and cat outfitters. If you missed out this time, make sure you enter our comp to win a four night bed and breakfast break, which is based on our Summer Getaway offer whereby guests staying four nights enjoy the fourth night half price.
Good luck, and we look forward to celebrating our latest award with you soon!
Andrew

Team HG roll their sleeves up for charity

The Holbeck Ghyll team has been bitten by the charity bug just lately, with various members of staff taking part in some exceptional challenges to raise funds for some fantastic causes.
While receptionist Trish leaped 14,500 feet from a plane in aid of Tommy’s, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and the Alzheimer’s Society, owner Lisa (pictured above looking rather glamorous considering the task in hand) was one of just 18 women who pulled a one-ton car from Ambleside to Kirkstone Pass – via the aptly, and painfully, named Struggle Road – in aid of CancerCare.
Sommelier Stefan and waitress Eliska also demonstrated hidden talents when they embarked on the famous 112mile Fred Whitton Challenge – an annual, thigh-busting cycling event which this year had to be cut short because of torrential rain. Stefan and Eliska battled the awful weather and still managed to complete 86 miles, raising almost £1,000 for The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust so far. If you'd like to make a donation, you can do so via the link below - and please accept our thanks in advance.

Guests with a love of beautiful cars got a thrill when a fleet of 20 fabulous Ferraris arrived at Holbeck Ghyll as part of an owners' tour of great roads and gastro hotels between Cheshire and Scotland. Among the luxury supercars that lined up at the hotel was a stunning 458 Italia, a 599 Special Edition GTE and a gleaming F12. Head Chef David McLaughlin photographed some of the cars lined up with the breathtaking view of Windermere and the fells behind.
If stunning cars are your thing, why not make the most of your stay by hiring our classic E-Type Jag for the day?
