NACY NewsYouth Advisory Table on Child Welfare RedesignOn July 29, 2020, the Ontario government released its plan to redesign the child welfare system. The Strategy focuses on strengthening families and communities through prevention, early intervention and seeking more permanent homes for children and youth in care when they cannot stay in their own homes or communities. The Students Commission of Canada (SCC) has been contracted through a competitive procurement process by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) to support a Youth Advisory Table that will inform MCCSS on the Child Welfare Redesign. The SCC is a national charitable organization that purposely works with others to ensure that young people’s voices are heard, valued and that their ideas for improving themselves, their peer and their communities are put into action. The SCC previously supported the Government of Ontario’s Residential Services Youth Panel in 2016-2018. Who: Youth aged 18-25 with lived experience in or with the Child Welfare System to join the 10-15 person Youth Advisory Table (YAT). No prior experience necessary. The YAT is an Ontario-wide advisory. Priority will be given to ensuring diverse regional representation and ensuring YAT members reflect the demographic make-up of the children and youth in the child welfare system. For this reason, we will also prioritize the recruitment of Black, racialized, Indigenous, LGBTQ2S+ youth, youth with disabilities, and youth who may identify as intersecting on the previously-mentioned identities. For example: Black, LGBTQ2S+ youth. What: YAT members will meet virtually bi-weekly for about 7.5 hours a month from October 2021 to May 2022 to provide input and voice on the Child Welfare Redesign. Members will be supported by a team of four trained trauma-informed SCC facilitators with lived and professional experience with the child welfare system, two members of the SCC’s Elders Council and a counsellor/support person. The facilitation support team includes Indigenous, Black, racialized, LGBTQ2S+ members. Some of the SCC facilitator team identify with intersecting identities.
