COVID-19 RESILIENCE FUNDING

Equestrian WA is pleased to announce that we have been successful in receiving a grant of $300,000 from the State Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, and Lotterywest for the COVID-19 Resilience funding.

This grant is to support EWA and the SEC with income shortfalls due to the restrictions that COVID-19 has placed on the Sport. The funds will be used in accordance with the grant conditions and include support for our Sport committees so we can maintain services to our members.

EWA would like to thank the State government, the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Lotterywest for providing the funding and supporting EWA during these difficult times.

EQUESTRIAN WA MEMBER'S FORUM

Last night, Equestrian WA held a members' forum to discuss the EA voluntary administration, the proposed new EA Constitution, and the EWA board's actions and concerns on the issues this had raised.

The meeting was attended by sixty-two people, and an additional eight joined via Zoom. The meeting was opened by EWA Chairperson Ron Fleming giving an overview of the actions EWA, EVic, ENSW, ESA and ETas have taken since the 2nd Creditors meeting to enable the EA administrator KordaMentha to propose a new EA Constitution that is supported by EWA and the other 4 States, which would meet the terms of the DoCA and avoid the liquidation of EA.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH | Janet Reid

Janet is an accredited Dressage, Show Horse and swabbing steward.

Five years ago the Equestrian Western Australia (EWA) Show Horse committee asked her if she would be interested in stewarding at the EWA Horse of the Year and the other two shows conducted by the committee throughout the year. Janet agreed to fill this role and put a great deal of time familiarising herself with rules and the differences between Dressage and Show Horse.

The competitors have a great deal of respect for Janet. Her manner in dealing with competitors is one of assistance and encouragement.

During the last five years, Janet has trained and mentored other people interested in becoming stewards - EWA now have one more accredited steward and two more who have nearly completed their training.

COACH OF THE YEAR | Liesl Wilding

Congratulations Liesl Wilding, an EA Level 2 Dressage Coach and SSTA, who lives in Mount Helena, Western Australia.

"I started riding at a very young age on the family farm, which is 100km east of Perth. All the stock work was done on horseback, so I spent many hours in the saddle behind sheep and cattle with my dad. My mum wouldn’t have anything to do with horses, she tried her hardest to put me off them.

When I was about 11 years old, I started going to pony club. I had two ponies which I competed on in show jumping and in the Prince Phillip games. I rode ponies for other people in the breeding and show horse ring at many Royal Shows.

After school, I went to agricultural college and had a couple of horses I evented on. My passion for riding led me back to working in the equestrian industry. I worked on thoroughbred studs, then started breaking in and training horses and coaching.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) has today launched the Off the Track WA (OTTWA) Passport, an initiative designed to assist in the tracking of retired thoroughbreds and standardbreds in the State.

The passport, part of the commitments outlined in the WA Racehorse Welfare Plan announced in November 2019, will work to ascertain details of the location and ownership of horses once they leave the care of the racing industry.

With the latest easing of restrictions in Phase 4 by the WA Government, we have now reviewed and updated the following documents to support the gradual restart of the equestrian activities in WA.

We all want to get back to normal life as soon as possible. Ensuring our members, their friends and families remain safe and prepared is critical to achieving this.

One of the ways we can all play our part is to get the Australian Government's COVIDSafe app. While downloading the app is entirely voluntary, it has been highly recommended by both the Australian and WA Governments to assist our health professionals and help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Equestrian WA is encouraging all members to consider downloading the app to help keep our community safer.

EWA gratefully acknowledges the support of the Department of Sport and LotteryWest.
