New Creations for the Icelandic Stage

Performing Arts Iceland celebrates the opening of the season 2013-2014 with a newsletter dedicated to new creations in Icelandic Theatres.  35 new Icelandic works are expected to be premiered, there off 5 new children works and 11 choreographies

 

Amongst new creations this season:

The Elusive Portal - Theatre for children by Salka Guðmundsdóttir ( author of Breaker) - The Elusive Portal is a fantasy about a young girl who discovers a portal to another world in her bedroom in an old house in the countryside.  The Elusive Portal premiered September 8th 2013.

My Kind of Guy - by Bragi Ólafsson - New Icelandic play about the eternal struggle between the sword and the pen. Bragi is the current Icelandic Nordic Drama Train author. My Kind of Guy premiered September 14th 2013.

Tragedy - by Mikael Torfason - A modern love story about a young couple trying to save the marriage that is destroying them. With music by John Grant. Tragedy premieres September 20th 2013.

Small Changes - by Ragnar Bragason ( awarded Playwright of the Year 2013 for Laburnum) -  A poorly planned robbery in a small town goes badly wrong. On the run, the robbers seek shelter in an empty nursery school and wait for the fourth member of the gang, who has disappeared in the car. It is a typical Icelandic fiasco or what? Small Changes premieres in January 2014.

Blue Eye -  by Tyrfingur Tyrfingsson -  A play about people who lose their way in the revolution of the blue bin and want to find a way out. Tyrfingur Tyrfingsson is a young, up-and-coming author. He received a nomination for The Icelandic Performing Arts Award in 2013 and is the Reykjavik City Theatre’s new playwright-in-residence.  Blue Eye Premiers in February 2014.

The Swans Mate for Life - by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir - A new play about the peculiar nature of marriage. A married couple seeks help from a psychologist who proposes a non-traditional therapy. The Swans Mate for Life premieres in February 2014.

The Ferry - by Kristín Marja Baldursdóttir ( author of A Reply to Helga´s Letter and The People in the Basement ) - Five Icelandic women and three men find themselves abroad. They all urgently need to get to Iceland but as flights are grounded due to a volcanic eruption they are forced to sail home on a rusty old ship´s final voyage. When the people board ship, it becomes clear that all is not as expected. The Ferry premieres in March 2014.

The Jazz Singer's Diary - by Valur Freyr Einarsson and CommonNonsense ( author of the award winning performance My Mother- in- Law) - The Jazz Singer’s Diary is a story about continuity through the generations. How the pain of one generation is passed on to the next. Haraldur has, according to himself, often narrowly escaped death. But after a phone conversation with the doctor, everything indicates that he will not get away this time. It is time to put affairs in order, become a decent human being. The Jazz Singer's Diary premieres in April 2014.
