In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is all the more imperative that we fix California’s financial aid system in order to more equitably serve our students. The Fix Financial Aid Coalition is committed to ensuring the students enrolled at all three segments get reform and reinvestment in the Cal Grant programs and have agreed on the following common goals and objectives in seeking financial aid reform in the 2021-22 legislative session. These goals set our priorities for new funding in out years. Investment:

In our efforts, however, we need student advocacy to give voice to our campaign. We need your stories! If you have been denied a CalGrant and had to incur student debt or if you have an experience with CalGrant that you would like to share, please share with us via this link by March 5th. Budget UpdateThe Governor’s proposed budget includes many student-focused priorities that are critical to supporting students during this time. It is our job as student leaders to make sure this proposal is approved by the Legislature by providing public comment at one of the many upcoming budget hearings. Please keep on the lookout for messages from your Region about the next budget hearing. You can also find out more about upcoming hearings and how to call in on the Assembly and Senate websites. If you have not signed up for your Region listserv, please sign up today via this link. April AdvocacyJoin us for Advocacy in April! The SSCCC will hold an Advocacy in April virtual event on April 14, 2021. This year’s theme is “From Isolation to Acceleration: Investing in our Students to Create an Equitable Economic Recovery” and will feature speakers, a legislative panel, and legislative visits for students. Mark your calendar and watch for more information about how to participate in the advocacy event! FACCC Advocacy and Policy ConferenceThe SSCCC is partnering with the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges to host its Advocacy and Policy Conference March 12 - 13, 2021. This year's theme is "Building a Just Future: From Hope to Action". Among the keynote speakers are Dr. Barbara Ransby and Dr. Melina Abdullah who are both scholars in pursuit of social justice. This is an opportunity for students to network and share ideas with faculty and other students across the state, participate in workshops and hear from top decision-makers on policy and budget. This year the SSCCC is able to sponsor all students who are interested in attending the FACCC Advocacy and Policy Conference. Click this link to register for the conference. We hope to see you there! SSCCC Sponsored BillsThe SSCCC has been really busy this legislative year. In the fall, the SSCCC approved a number of legislative priorities, which guided our work beginning in January. Below is a brief summary of the four bills the SSCCC is sponsoring.
These bills were introduced this past week. We will begin working with each of the SSCCC Legislative Affairs Directors to organize students to support the legislation. Watch for more information about how you can contact your legislator to help us advance student priorities. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Vice President of Legislative Affairs Andrew Nickens at vpla@studentsenateccc.org. Local Advocacy EventLegislative Deadlines
