No Images? Click here 2017 NZ Composer Sessions took place in Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre last week. The selected works were performed by the NZSO, conducted by Hamish McKeich, and recorded by RNZ Concert. The following composers' scores were selected by representatives of the NZSO, RNZ Concert and CANZ: This year, for the first time, two orchestral works were added to the Resound Studio collection: Epithalamion Overture by David Farquhar and Fanfare by Jack Speirs. SOUNZ Community Commission – call for scores Last year, Julian Raphael’s project with community group ACTIVE was selected. A concert of a song cycle exploring what it means to be a young person with intellectual disabilities takes place on 27 May at the Salvation Army Citadel, Wellington. In addition to their performance, the Wellington Community Choir will perform a selection of NZ music. Last month our filmmaker Chris Watson attended ACTIVE community groups’ rehearsal and recorded an interview with the SOUNZ Community Commission composer Julian Raphael. Change of policy with National Library Legal Deposit Resound project continues to present recordings from past NZ music concerts. Last year, clarinetist Anna McGregor curated a portrait concert for Anthony Ritchie at the Wermland Opera in Sweden, with the Dalecarlia Clarinet Quintet and others. In February 2016 the NZ Festival, in association with Chamber Music New Zealand, hosted the Miyata-Yoshimura-Suzuki Trio, performing new works by Dylan Lardelli, Chris Gendall and Samuel Holloway alongside traditional and contemporary Japanese repertoire. In the following documentary, the composers discuss their collaboration with the Japanese musicians. National Jazz Festival took place in Tauranga over the Easter weekend. In addition to the main festival, the National Youth Jazz Competition took place for the 40th time, showcasing the very best of emerging jazz players from across the country. For the second time, SOUNZ gave an award for the Best Performance of a New Zealand Composition: congratulations to the winner Auckland Grammar School. Friends of SOUNZ |
