Dear friends and colleagues,
A spectre that was haunting Europe – the spectre of Brexitween – has melted and resolved itself in an election. This meant all our partners could with easier conscience remove the skeletons out of their closets, put up the cobwebs, or fly off cackling into the night.
Meanwhile in the KQ coven, we've been boiling up a mélange of potent events meant to stimulate and bewitch. Many of these will have to wait to be shared until the next newsletter, but what we can highlight here are two specialist events coming this November looking at diversity from very different angles.
The first event – for HR professionals, researchers and anyone championing diversity in their organisation – is a roundtable discussion on intersectionality. Previous discussions on diversity have focussed on broader terms – neurodiversity, BAME and LGBTQ+ diversity – but what of the voices and experiences of those at the intersections of these identities? If you are an expert on the subject, or interested in knowing more about it, join us as we burrow into what diversity in the workplace means.
Our second roundtable brings to the surface a hidden gap in our clinical data with potentially disastrous consequences. Were you aware that most drugs arrive on pharmacy shelves following trials on majority Caucasian male subjects? Did you know that this data homogeneity can lead some drug users to unknowingly overdose? We're just cracking the lid on this enormous issue and are fortunate to have the partners in our membership to lift it right off – including BenevolentAI who are hosting this November congress.
Plenty of partner events below. You'll find many more events in our most recent edition of the What's On guide. Tweet us if you find one around the Knowledge Quarter.
Be sure to share and encourage friends, family and colleagues to subscribe to future newsletters via our website.
With best wishes,
Knowledge Quarter Team

KQ Call to Action: Data Diversity in Research
20 November 09:00-11:00 at BenevolentAI
The data gap issue is not new, as Caroline Criado Perez demonstrated in her recent book, Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men. From stab vests to medical trials, the “one-size-fits-men” approach puts lives at risk.
The event will be a forum in which pharma industries, academia, institutions, research groups and private companies based in the Knowledge Quarter can come together, and explore solutions to make data sets (particularly in medical research) more diverse.
