Committee Leadership UpdateFarewell Dr Gordon Hoag![]() Dr Gordon Hoag has been involved with the Shared Care Committee since 2009, In July 2011, he assumed the role of Co-chair for Doctors of BC – with his term concluding in March 2018. On behalf of the Shared Care Committee, and all partners who had the pleasure of working with him, we wish to thank Gordon for his enthusiasm, leadership and courage in leading Shared Care for meaningful, sustainable change. Gordon leaves many legacies as a result of his passion and untiring advocacy for patients and families in BC. ![]() Welcome Dr Ken HughesDr Kenneth Hughes took over from Gordon as Co-chair this past July. Ken is an orthopedic surgeon based in Richmond BC, who has served on the Shared Care Committee since September 2012 as a specialist representative. Ken wears many hats as part of his keen interest in quality improvement; he's a member of the Specialist Services Committee; the Provincial Surgical Executive Committee, Co-chair of the Hip Fracture Redesign Project, and most recently, Co-chair of a provincial collaborative committee, Measurement System for Physician Quality Improvement. Ken is also the former president of the BC Orthopedic Association. New Shared Care DirectorWith Katie Hill's retirement in July, Margaret English has been promoted to the position of Director of Shared Care. Margaret has been part of the Shared Care team for the past four years, leading provincial initiatives such as Polypharmacy Risk Reduction, and Coordinated Seniors Care. Margaret is a health care professional with over 20 years' experience, who, before joining Doctors of BC, held the position of Executive Director of the North Shore Division of Family Practice. ![]() Elders Talk About Healthy Medication Use Through Indigenous Storytelling![]() Maintaining good health when taking multiple medications is the theme of an Indigenous storytelling project of Shared Care's Polypharmacy Risk Reduction Initiative, the First Nations Health Authority, and three Secwepemc Elders, Jean, Cecelia and Clara. Called 'Coyote's Food Medicines', the story launched July 11th to over 3,000 First Nations Elders at an annual Elders' Gathering in Duncan,BC. Hear the Elders share their thoughts around the use of multiple medications in their community in the short video above. You can also read the 'Coyote's Food Medicines' story and learn more about the project at: Fostering Collaborative Maternity Care![]() In some BC communities, pregnant women can face fragmented and siloed perinatal care, split between family doctors, registered midwives and obstetricians –who may not communicate, collaborate, or even trust each other. Recognizing that "you can't just order people to collaborate", a new Shared Care initiative, called the Maternity Network, is providing support to help foster interprofessional collaborative maternity care in BC. Ten communities are now involved. ![]() Save the Date!The Joint Collaborative Committees (JCCs) will once again host a pre-forum all-day event as part of the BCPSQC’s Quality Forum in February 2019. The JCC event will take place on February 26th, before the Quality Forum’s main programming on February 27 & 28. All three days will take place at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver. This year’s JCC theme focuses on ‘The Power of Togetherness’, and will be presenting projects that demonstrate alignment, integration and collaborative breakthroughs. There will be no call for abstracts as projects will be identified under these themes. However, if you wish to present as part of the Quality Forum’s main programming, the BCPSQC has issued a call for submission of abstracts, due by Friday, September 7th. The JCCs are happy to sponsor attendance for any physician wishing to attend all three days. Never attended before? Hear physicians share their thoughts on the value of the event in this 3 min video. ![]() Child & Youth Mental Health Community of PracticeThe three working groups of the CYMHSU Community of Practice (CoP) continue to work on identified priority areas, and have just released their first newsletter summarizing their progress. The newsletter also provides information on useful resources as well as details of an online forum available to all 145+ members of the CoP. If you're a physician who is passionate about child and youth mental health, and you wish to get involved in the CoP, please contact ejanel@doctorsofbc.ca.
