Regent College - Your child loving learning! No Images? Click here THURSDAY 8TH APRIL 2017. Dear Regent families, I trust that you'll enjoy reading this "Regent Digest"; our last for Term 1. Principled Parenting Thank you and well-done to those families who participated in the 'Principled Parenting' course over 6 Tuesday evenings, this term. A special thanks to Graeme and Gai Irvine, for their presentation and expertise with the material. The program offered practical help with all parenting issues, from the very young children through the teenage years and even into adulthood. Having participated in the program, I was encouraged by the reminder that parenting is about the long-game; that is, that we won't 'get-it-right' all the time, but aiming for consistency along the right course, is the target. God's Word is a great place to begin, with the well-known and invaluable instruction to "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." (Proverbs 22:6 NIV Bible). Farewell Thank you and farewell to Mrs Magdalene Chow, who has been working in College Administration during Term 1. Magdalene's expertise and friendly style contributed to a smooth commencement to the school year. Long service leave Following 8 years of faithful service, we thank Mrs Mirella Kerrigan, who will be enjoying a period of long service leave, during Term 2. Staff Thank you to the wonderful Regent College staff, for their passion, dedication and commitment to the important work of student learning, here at Regent College. Finally, thank you to College Chaplain, Mr Steve Wickham, for his excellent contribution to the Easter service, this week. His engaging presentation which linked the message of the cross with the College motto, "Life in Christ", was well received by students and the broader audience. As a College, we pray God’s richest blessing for you and your family across this sacred time. Yours faithfully, Derek Nicholls. Principal. EASTER SERVICE @ RIVERVIEW If you are considering an Easter service, you might like to register for a service at Riverview Church HERE A FEW REMINDERS Term 1 concludes this Friday 7th April. Uniform Shop by appointment Wednesday 19th April (Winter Uniform Term 2). All students need to be correctly dressed in their winter uniform for the commencement of Term 2. Term 2 commences Wednesday 26th April (following ANZAC Day Public Holiday) The College Calendar is currently being updated for Term 2 and you are encouraged to view events and dates during the break HERE. KINDERGARTEN 1&2 This fortnight, Kindergarten 1 and 2 went for a walk around block near the College. On our way, we became aware of many things in our environment. We heard many different types of birds; however, they were often difficult to see. The students in our class recognised letters and numerals on car license plates, signs and post boxes. Mrs Huxley reminded us that it is very important to stop when we come to a driveway and to watch out for reversing cars. We are learning to stay on the footpath, hold our partner's hand and notice things around us. It has been a great opportunity to enjoy the fine weather and we found surprises around every corner. Finally (opposite), the students have enjoyed meeting and reading with their new Year 5/6 'buddies'. Mrs Huxley - teacher KINDERGARTEN 3 The Kindergarten 3 students have enjoyed spending time with their new Year 5/6 buddies. They have come to visit us for buddy reading and last week they helped us plant some vegetables in our garden beds. In literacy we have been focusing on counting, clapping and jumping out the number of syllables in words. We have also been focusing on: identifying rhyming words, reading lots of rhyming books, singing songs that have rhyming words in them and thinking of all different words that rhyme. In numeracy we have been extending our number recognition skills and consolidating our knowledge of numbers up to 10. We enjoy singing lots of different counting songs. We are looking forward to continuing our learning journey in Term 2. Mrs Stein - teacher PRE-PRIMARY Shapes, shapes, shapes and more shapes! The pre-primaries have begun their new topic in maths this week. They have been exploring two dimensional shapes in the environment. The classes first explored the school to see what shapes they could find, and along the way made some drawings of the shapes they found. Back in the classroom, after reading the book ‘Mouse Shapes’, the students investigated how they could use shapes to create different objects. Lastly the class has been sorting and grouping many of the shapes identified. Miss Baker and Miss Shaw - teachers CLASS 1.1 The Year 1s had an exciting week last week, as we presented our highly anticipated Year 1 Assembly! The students were very excited to showcase what they have been learning about patterns and the assembly went off without a hitch. We have continued our focus on patterns in maths this week while looking at skip counting, exploring the number patterns that we make when skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. We were also fortunate to have a special War Memorial box to explore in the leadup to ANZAC Day, and we discussed the importance of ANZAC Day and the significance of the items in the box. Miss Masters - teacher CLASS 1/2 Recently in Mathematics, we have been investigating patterns. We learnt that patterns have a repeating element and that they can be made using all sorts of materials. We used things such as pom-poms, pegs, unifix blocks, beads, pipe-cleaners and number cards to make patterns. The Year 1 students have also been learning about place value by playing the popstick trading game. Miss Jongeling - teacher CLASS 2.1 Last Thursday, the Year 2.1 had their Water Corporation Incursion. The students learned how to help conserve water at home, school and how waste water is removed from their houses. The students helped to make waste water. They added toilet paper, a paper towel, bread crumbs, hair, cereal, tomato sauce, paint and chocolate powder into a container of water and mixed it around with a spoon. Next, the students poured the waste water through a sieve to demonstrate how waste water is cleaned from debris. In Science, the students used a syringe to pull water from inside a cup filled with gravel. This demonstrates how ground water can be pumped to the surface and used to water gardens. The students used plastic cups with holes and poured water on different surfaces. They discovered that water can soak into the ground, form in pools and run off slopes. The students investigated how much water a synthetic sponge and a natural sea sponge soaked up. They discovered that both sponges soaked up approximately the same amount of water. Mrs Jenkins - teacher CLASS 3.1 Throughout this term the Year 3 students have enjoyed exploring fractions and place value using some of the equipment in our new Maths kits. They have worked together to grow and challenge each other's understanding and in doing so have further developed their skills of communication and cooperation. Another opportunity to do so was our Earth Hour sleepover. Students, parents and teachers gathered by torch light to share in a sing along, games, sliders and fireside smores before tucking into sleeping bags to gaze at the stars while nodding off. Thank you to everyone for helping make it such a pleasant and enjoyable and event. Mrs Johnston and Mrs Ellis - teachers A SCARECROW I'm standing here in a garden bed, When I can barely move my head. I'm so annoyed when it is Spring, Because of the noise the birds bring. Winter's so nice because nothing grows on the floor, Also I don't need to do my job anymore. My job is to scare crows away, I know they're not allowed to stay! By Lianne. CLASS 4.1 In 4.1 we took on a design challenge to make a scarecrow for our garden where our bean plants were growing. The scarecrow had to be made from recycled materials and be able to stand upright in a pot or in the ground. Hopefully you have all seen them standing proudly in the garden! We had some amazing scarecrows! We then looked at our scarecrow designs in our maths lesson and had to identify any shapes or mathematical concepts we could see. This photo (below) is of Riddhi's scarecrow and her observations. In English, we wrote a procedure about making a scarecrow and then a poem. Mrs Innes - teacher
CLASS 5/6 Pictured - The Year five and six students were working with 3 dimensional geometric shapes by combining parts into different shapes. Using their problem solving and special awareness skills, students predicted what would happen when a shape is rotated or the length of a side is changed. Mrs Lotsos and Mrs Wilkinson - teachers BELOW Some Year 5+6 designs as part of a recent focus in Art and Italian. DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES This term, the year 3’s have been working on computer graphics. They have experimented with primary and secondary colours, horizontal and vertical lines and learning how to import pictures that they have created, into another document. Once finished, the students used an online Mondrian painting simulator to create their own Piet Mondrian painting. The Year 2’s from 2.1 and 1.2 have been using templates in Graphics, using Paint.NET. Combining their class theme of water they have turned Mrs Jenkins and Miss Jongeling into pirates. Below is a sample of their work! Mrs Saxton MUSIC Year 5 students have been learning to improvise on xylophones using different minor pentatonic scales and accompany learned songs using a simple chordal pattern. Picture - Year 6’s composing and rehearsing some ‘Stomp Stick’ rhythms to accompany the choir item for the Performing Arts Festival - Term 2. The Year 1.1 and 1/2 classes have been learning about how to create a Musical Soundscape. The students enjoyed creating a ‘Thunderstorm’ last week, exploring the different instrument timbres and varying dynamics to imitate the rain and thunder. Mrs Marshall.
SWIM CARNIVAL Recently the Year 4,5+6 students participated in a school swimming carnival. Pictured are the runner-up and first place winners for each grade. On the day we were blessed with fabulous weather and terrific community competition. A special thanks to parent helpers on the day! Mrs French - teacher

EASTER ASSEMBLY This week (Wednesday), the Year 5+6 students prepared and presented the Easter assembly, including the piece of artwork, opposite. The cross represents the death that Jesus took on as the consequence for our sin. The students included their names, acknowledging that His death was for all, even me. AN AMAZING RESULT! Last Friday, Regent College Inter-school swim squad participated in a carnival at Challenge Stadium; the competition involved students from 10 similar-sized Christian schools around Perth. Regent College enjoyed a super day in the pool, winning the overall event! Well done to competitors, most of whom are pictured in the photograph, below. YEAR 5+6 VISIT 'CONNECT VICTORIA PARK' Recently, Luke Garswood, CEO for CONNECT Victoria Park, contacted the College with an invitation for students to participate in an intergenerational art project with local senior citizens. On Wednesday 29th March, the Year 5 + 6 students walked down to Mackie Street in Victoria Park and spent 1.5 hours with a group of elderly, learning how to knit and crochet, as well as beginning some thinking and discussion about an intergenerational mural with community artist, Charlotte O'Shea. The sessions should continue into early Term 2, whereby a mural should be produced, as well as some winter woolies from the newly acquired crochet and knitting skills. The students were well received as they respectfully engaged with the elderly. Thank you to CONNECT Victoria Park for the opportunity. YEAR 3 EARTH HOUR SLEEPOVER On Friday 24th March, families from Class 3.1 slept over at school (outside) to mark Earth Hour - an annual event across the world, encouraging individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for a period of 1 hour between 8.30-9.30pm. First and foremost it was an educational opportunity. Of course, there was plenty of fun as food was eaten, songs were sung and games were played - pretty much in the dark. Of course, it was certainly dark as everyone settled down to sleep outside on the College verandas. Thanks to staff and those families who participated. COLLEGE P&F BUSH DANCE The College P&F would like to thank all the families who attended and danced the night-away with the recent annual Bush Dance. It was very well-attended and there was a super community feel on the night! The 2017/18 entertainment book is a great way to try a new restaurant/cafe or simply enjoy your favourite food place! Regent College is happy to be able to offer this opportunity to parents, please follow the link, below. 20% of every membership sold contributes to our school fundraising.
