Regent News.

Dear College families,

Thank you to the many parents and grandparents who came together today to support the EduDance Concert. We hope to produce a copy of the concert and make it available to families in the coming weeks.

As we move into the holidays, I would like to express a sincere thank you to the many parents who volunteer across the College, each week - with canteen, reading groups and excursions. It is greatly appreciated and we do hope and trust that volunteers find it rewarding, also.

Finally, the College says thank you and farewell to Mrs Sarah-Jane Kale, who has been faithfully serving the College as an Education Assistant in Pre-primary. We pray and trust that Sarah-Jane and family enjoy safe travel as they move interstate, next week.

God bless and enjoy a safe break.

Derek Nicholls. Principal.

IMPORTANT DATES

School resumes for Term 3 -  TUESDAY 19th JULY

College Photo Days - Tuesday 26th July and Friday 29th July. Uniform shop will be open Week 1 of Term 3 (not during the term break). Family order envelopes available from College Administration.

KINDERGARTEN. This past fortnight the children in Kindergarten 1 have been exploring potions and mysterious solutions. They experimented with different liquids and solids, combining them to observe what happens. The children have been delighted to see their elixirs bubbling and glistening. Why do some things mix together and change? Why do others float on the top refusing to combine? Our class is full of questions and wonderings.

Mrs Huxley.

KINDERGARTEN 2. As the children continue learning about animals, they are also being challenged to go beyond their current ability. They have been challenged to create animals by using different shapes on paper and even animal faces on paper plates without any photographs or assistance! They have done a fantastic job! Come in and see our creations in our room.

Mrs Balakrishnan.

PRE-PRIMARY. We have been so focused in Pre-primary, learning all about Staying Alive! In Science, we discussed sea animals and what they need to live. We researched the Great Barrier Reef using our smartboard to find out more information. We also made sea animal slime and mixed it using our hands!

During Mathematics we have been learning all about numbers. We have used lots of different materials to match numbers and their quantities. In our classroom we also introduced a recycling bin and looked at what we can do to help our environment.

Mrs Stein and Miss Baker

YEAR 1. Year 1.1 and 1.2 had their D-Day (Dinosaur Day) last Monday. It was a fantastic day where we designed our own dinosaur based on all information learnt this term. We each drew an annotated picture of our new dinosaur and gave it a scientific name. Using recycled materials, we spent most of the day constructing our dinosaurs. The classroom really looked like D-Day was happening! With our dinosaur created, we reflected on the experience and evaluated our dinosaurs. The day was a wonderful success and Miss Shaw and Miss Jongeling were very impressed with our efforts, even our cleaning-up skills!

YEAR 2.  Last fortnight, students from both year 2 classes enjoyed Science activities testing push forces and gravity. The students designed, created and evaluated their very own parachute. They had to choose materials that would help their parachute stay in the air as long as possible and decide what the best shape was to use. The students attached a weight to their parachute and then tested their parachutes outside. All of the students’ parachutes were successful!

Continued...for News, the students had to make a paper plane at home with help from their parents and present it to the class. We had a competition to determine which paper plane flew the fastest. Here are the winners!

Mrs Jenkins.

YEAR 2/3. As part of our Character First program, we have been focused on Persistence and Orderliness this term. The animal in nature that represents orderliness is the chipmunk. Students have discovered that chipmunks always keep their work and play areas clean and neat. Students have tidied their desks and have set goals to keep them tidy.

Year 2 students have been learning about patterns in Mathematics. They created their own number patterns on the mini white boards.

Year 3 students were challenged to design and make a popcorn holder in Science. Students were asked to use recycled materials to demonstrate how reusing materials is good for the environment. What type of change occurs when we make popcorn; Reversible or irreversible?

Mrs Wilkinson/Mrs Ellis.

YEAR 3. In Digital Technologies, Mrs. Saxton taught us how to ‘AirDrop’ photos we took on the iPads. AirDrop is an amazing tool!

In Mathematics, we have been doing surveys and tallies, so we walked down to see the cars on Canning Highway and made a tally of different coloured cars we saw.

In Science we have been learning about reversible and irreversible changes, so we made popcorn holders to hold our popcorn which we will be making this week.

Mrs Innes.

YEAR 4. During the last fortnight, class 4.1 enjoyed an excursion to Fremantle to see the Duyfken replica and to investigate Australia's maritime history; a wonderful day! A sincere thank you to the several parents helpers who attended and assisted. In addition, the students  have been hitting table tennis balls with the new equipment in PE, 'busting a few moves' in preparation for the Edudance performance, competing for a place in the finals of the TEDdy Talks and challenging each other in a times tables competition.  A great finish to Term 2!

INTER-SCHOOL CHESS. The Regent College Inter-school chess team has completed its sixth and final round of chess. They won all 6 rounds. Up next is the finals! Mr Tracy.

SOCCER. Regent Kings played their grand final on Friday the 24th of June and unfortunately were defeated 0-2. They showed tremendous fight and determination and were unfortunate with a few of their shots at goal just missing. Great effort and all players should be proud of themselves and team mates. Thank you to all Regent staff students and families who came down and cheered the Regent Kings on.

NETBALL. Also on the 24th June, the Year 5/6 girls participated in the WASSCA Netball carnival at Wilson Park. They showed great team spirit and improving netball skills. Thank you to Mrs Johnson for her support and scoring throughout the day. Thanks also to Mr Baird for driving us to and from the event and Anne from Leisure Life Recreation Centre for umpiring the games.

Mrs French.

ITALIAN. Mrs Kerrigan with students who achieved terrific results in the recent Language Perfect Competition. As always, Regent performed very well in this international competition, achieving 4th this year out of 102 schools that had 51-100 students registered.

TEDdy Talks. A majority of the Grand Final participants in the recent TEDdy Talks. Overall winners to be listed in the next Regent News. Thank you to our expert adjudicators for making the tough decisions!
