JPC Athletics Carnival

Today we held our annual JPC Athletics Carnival. All students from each house participated in fantastic spirit. There were lots of outstanding individual results and some new records from a number of our students. Aligned with the current Olympics the display of sportsmanship was fantastic. On behalf of the PE staff we would like to thank all teachers and staff who gave their time to make the day great. The students should also be thanked for the great spirit they participated in. The final point score will be announced at school.

Science Week - STRANDBEESTS at JPC!!

This week was National Science Week and we celebrated with our MINI-STRANDBEEST construction and race!

Pictured here are some of our STRANDBEEST owners with their creations. The speediest STRANDBEEST - “Funky Beest” was built and raced by Georgia Wallace, Shaelagh Sutherland and Laura McIntosh, blitzing the rest on the ‘racetrack’ across the desktops!

What is a STRANDBEEST?

Theo Jansen has been creating Strandbeest (Dutch: strand=beach; beest=beast), wind-walking examples of what Jansen suggests is a kind of artificial life, since 1990. What was at first a rudimentary "breed" has slowly evolved with the aid of evolutionary computation techniques into a generation of machines that to some degree are able to react to their environment.

You may have seen a version of the Strandbeests in the Rio Olympics opening ceremony!

If you would like more info about what Strandbeests are, go to www.strandbeest.com and see the real (big) thing!

NAPLAN

Families in Years 7 and 9 will have received their student's NAPLAN results late this week. NAPLAN testing is a useful tool for schools to gain data for both year groups and individuals on strengths and areas for development in Literacy and Numeracy. At the same time, it is just a snapshot in time and because of this, performance and results for individuals can vary.

We have begun to analyse the data and will use this to further develop and refine our programs.

Social Justice Group Hygeine Kits

Dear JPC community,

The Social Justice group is working on a project to support people less fortunate than us by preparing Hygiene Kits.

The St Vincent de Paul night patrol van will be delivering these Hygiene Kits to homeless people in Canberra.

If you would like to help make these Hygiene Kits, please purchase and bring the following items to school. Each year group will be responsible for bringing in certain items.

Year 7: Shampoo, Conditioner & Face Washers
Year 8: Soap, Wet Wipes & Face Washers
Year 9: Toothbrushes, Toothpaste & Face Washers
Year 10: Combs or Brushes, Sanitisers & Face Washers

Please give your donations to Mrs Ganderton or Ms Zorzi, and the Social Justice group will soon begin to make the kits.

Thank you so much for your support,

ACT Teen Chef Competition

Five of our year 10 JPC students have been selected to represent the school and compete in the 2016 ACT Teen Chef Competition held on August 31st. The team must design and cook a 3 course meal, using 3 mandatory ingredients, Kale, chestnuts and mandarin. The fourth course is a mystery dish… Students must cost their menu and purchase all ingredients from the Belconnen market on the morning of the competition with a budget of $60.

Below is a snapshot of the contestant’s application to Teen Chef 2016:

ASC Girls Hockey Carnival
Monday 7th August 2016

An eager bunch of girls were awaiting me when I arrived at the Lyneham centre at 8.30am. Some had been there since 7.30 ready to kit up! Nerves were plenty as many of our team had never picked up a hockey stick before, let alone played against such strong opposition. The four teams we versed regularly play weekend hockey together so had a massive advantage over us. As a result, we were able to focus on winning qualities such as teamwork, effort, ability to have fun and good sportspersonship! We definitely won in those stakes. Actual results were as follows:

Game 1 : JPC vs Mackillop 0-1
Game 2: JPC vs Grammar 0-2
Game 3: JPC vs Merici 0-3
Game 4: JPC vs Daramalan 0-4

Merici won the year 9/10 division overall.

We definitely held our own, with the help and guidance of a few experienced players, Amy, Tara and Maddie; in fact, we surprised ourselves with our natural talent.

A massive thanks to Amy’s dad Brendan Duncan, also a hockey player, who helped out and umpired for us all day. Thanks also to the parents of the students who came to watch, support us and help us in our endeavours. Many thanks to Nic Whatman for organising the day and Maddie Harley for her assistance leading up to the day.

The JPC students were excellent ambassadors for the school, with exemplary behaviour and winning smiles. Many expressed interest in forming our own JPC field hockey team in 2017 and if this tournament is anything to go by, that is a definite possibility. Thanks to the 14 girls who participated: Brooklyn Curran, Madelyn Foster, Jasmine Kelley, Nicole Willis, Eloise Groeneveld, Claire Brooker, Emily Sajler, Tara Foster, Kayla Anderson, Abby Mitchell, Payton Askew, Madeleine D’Ambrosio, Stephanie Rock and Amy Duncan.

ACT Rugby League 9's Finals

Last Thursday, our Rugby League Boys played in the ACT Rugby League 9’s finals. The boys played excellently and with great sportsmanship and were unlucky to narrowly go down to a much bigger Calwell High School team 24 to 18. The  boys then played Melba Copland and after leading at half time went down by four points. The boys were gracious in defeat and will all grow from the experience of finals football.

Well done to all the boys who participated.

JPC Cheerleading

Last Sunday, 25 JPC students performed at the ACT Regional Cheerleading Competition.  This is a community event organised by all clubs throughout the ACT to raise money for charity and to raise awareness of the sport of cheerleading.  Our cheer team performed brilliantly on and off the floor and received first place. They were fantastic ambassadors for their sport, for JPC and for the community and were integral in the success of the day.

Many of our families also contributed to the day by baking yummy goodies for the cake stall and volunteering their time for the multitude of jobs needed in order for the day to run smoothly.

Money raised on the day will go to Ronald MacDonald House Canberra and to Cerebral Palsy Alliance.

Thank you to our athletes for your commitment and dedication and for showing true team spirit when faced with many challenges, and to our families for your continued support.  I was very proud to be part of such a wonderful community and to see the wonderful leadership, teamwork and skill displayed by our athletes.

Australasian Dance Scholarships

Ariana and I (Danijela) went to the annual Australian Teachers Of Dancing (ATOD) Australasian Scholarships. After placing in the ATOD scholarships in early June, we qualified for the Australasian Scholarships. I qualified for Tap and Ariana qualified for Hip Hop and Ballet. On the 28th of July, we travelled to Queensland to attend a master class and perform two routines.

The adjudicator (Judge) marked us in not only the performances but also the master classes. The master classes were challenging but extremely interesting to learn new choreography and steps.

On the Saturday and Sunday, we had to perform our two routines in a competitive environment filled with many amazing dancers. I had to perform two tap routines, a fast tap and a tacit (a routine when the music stops but you have to continue the rhythm in order to continue tapping when the music begins again). In Ariana’s Ballet section she had to perform a classical and a national character (Russian Scarf) routine and in her Hip Hop section she had to perform a set Hip hop dance (Choreographed by ATOD) and a Hip Hop dance (Choreographed by our dance teacher).

Despite us not placing, it was an amazing experience considering it was both of our first times attending Australasians.
