Welcome to Regent News

Dear families,

At Regent College we want your child(ren) to love learning! That's why we do, what we do! With that in mind, we do trust and pray that your family has enjoyed a smooth and enjoyable commencement to the 2016 school year.

Of course, starting at school for the first time, or in a new room with a new teacher and possibly making new friends, can be similar to the feelings that one might feel when moving house! It can feel a little unsettled and possibly traumatic for a period, but things do generally settle; children are terrific at recalibrating to match new environments and conditions. Of course, a long stretch of hot weather can significantly contribute further to any feelings of discomfort. The weather, too, will settle.

From a College view, the vast majority of students have bright, happy faces and appear to be totally excited about returning to school. A number of new programs will  commence across the year, some having already started within this first fortnight; another reason some students are really enjoying being back at school.

On a slightly different note, as a College we would like to congratulate and welcome the following staff.

Congratulations and Welcome.

  • Congratulations to Mrs Janice Lotsos (currently on leave), who recently gave birth to son, William.
  • Congratulations to Music teacher, Mrs Rebekah Marshall (formally Miss Lane), who was married in early January.
  • Congratulate to PE teacher, Miss Lauren Jones, who is to be married next weekend!
  • Welcome to Year 1 teacher, Miss Vanessa Jongeling, who is teaching alongside Mrs Jeanette Binder in Class 1.1.
  • Welcome to Mrs Deanne Johnston, who is teaching class 4.1 for Terms 1-3 this year.

There is a sizeable amount of content contained within this Regent News; it has been a busy fortnight. The format for the next while, at least, will be -

  • Welcome any special focus points
  • Regent Learning - different classes/grades will feature across newsletters.
  • Regent Together
  • Notices and reminders

Yours sincerely,

Derek Nicholls

Principal

This is me.

The children in Kindergarten 2 have been learning about routines in a school environment such as taking turns, lining up, working and playing as a team, sharing with their friends as well as talking nicely to others, to name a few.  They have also been learning about themselves and have painted their own portrait by examining themselves in the mirror and creating their own hand and foot prints!

Year 1 Learning.

Year 1.1 and 1.2 have been busy learning about lots of new topics. In Science we are learning about sound. To help us identify all the different sounds around the school we made some “listening ears”. We are already noticing the improvement our listening ears make. We also had fun recreating the Australia Day fireworks using paint, cardboard rolls and glitter. To celebrate Chinese New Year, the Year of the Monkey, we made our own monkeys using our hand-print. If has been a wonderful start to Year 1 and we are excited to keep learning.

Scientists. Year 2.

The Year 2 Scientists have commenced their year of learning by examining the topic of Water. One activity required that they conduct a water audit around the College. Students used a floor plan and identified all of the different places that they could source water - a bit of a tease on a particularly hot day!

The structure of the Science program has included students having different roles - one special role is that of the lead Scientist; or the person that carries the whistle, wears the white coat and enjoys some special privileges for the session. Some photographs will feature in coming newsletters.

Some of this. Some of that.

In Class 3.1, there has been lots of different learning going on; for example, we celebrated Chinese New Year by hearing some interesting facts about this celebration as well as writing the numbers 1-10 in Chinese! To learn about continents and oceans, we have to look at maps, so we have read some interesting books about how maps were made. In our Mathematics lessons we have been looking at odd and even numbers!

Soccer Fun.

On Friday, week 1, the team from Club House Football came to Regent and spent the day running soccer clinics with the students from Pre-Primary to Year 6. Students learnt soccer skills through a number of exciting games and drills, and had the chance to play a game with the helpers. All students went home with a flier from the club.  It was a hot, but very enjoyable day!

'Regent Together' will sometimes refer to the coming together of students across the school for various programs and ventures e.g. Running Club, or events including the parents and families e.g. The Fathering Project.

The Royals. Netball

On the first Tuesday of term, Regent College celebrated the launch of two new Netball teams. Titled, 'Regent Royals', both teams were actually scheduled to oppose each other in their first games, as part of a broader schools competition at Victoria Park Leisureplex. The teams are comprised of girls from Years 3-5. In coming months a team of girls from Year 6 will begin, also. The girls appeared to really enjoy themselves, achieving 1st and 2nd in their first games!

Thank you to Miss Lauren Jones and Mrs Wendy Innes for coordinating the training and overseeing the games.

Running Club. Do it!

The Regent College Running Club has commenced again for 2016.

This year, regular participants will receive a special Running Club singlet, as can be spotted on Miss Jones in the above photograph.

Students need to demonstrate regular attendance and commitment to receive and represent the College with this terrific new item of clothing.

The club meets each Monday morning at 8am at Raphael Park. Students should enquire at College Administration.

Coding Club.

This week 25 students met to begin a term of after-school fun learning with the device Sphere 2.0. Following a very strong response from interested applicants, Mrs Jay Saxton (Regent's ICT Teacher) coordinated an exciting introduction to the 'groovy' device. The remaining weeks of this term will include investigating the possibilities that are associated with this programmable device.

Choir time.

The College Choir has commenced for the new school year, under the expert leadership of Mrs Marshall (formally Miss Lane). With over fifty students in attendance from Years 2-6, it is terrific to witness such high student interest and motivation for participation in this rewarding program.

Notices. Here.

A reminder that swimming lessons commence this coming Monday 15th  for students in classes 1.1, 1.2, 2.1 and 2/3 (only). They continue for one week and then are followed by the remaining classes.
