ANNOUNCEMENT RE EWA JUMPING COMMITTEE & EXTRAORDINARY ELECTION OF JUMPING COMMITTEE

A meeting was held on Monday 18th March with all members of the EWA Jumping committee present, the EWA Chair and CEO also attended this meeting.  Some members of the Jumping Committee raised concerns that some jumping members were dissatisfied with how the sport of jumping was being managed.  The tenure of committee members was raised, and the CEO clarified that all members of the committee fell within the requirements of the EWA Constitution.

After considerable discussion whereby all members of the committee had an opportunity to speak, it was decided by vote that the best way forward was for all of the current members of the Jumping Committee to stand down and call for an election of a new committee. All members of the committee are welcome to nominate for the forthcoming election.

EWA would like to assure our members that the Jumping committee has not breached any governance obligations or code of conduct or behaviour.

Essential business of the Jumping Committee will be administered by 3 of the previous committee and the CEO of EWA in the interim.

EWA would like to acknowledge the work of each member of the Jumping Committee and recognises the importance of all volunteers on our Sports Committees.

To be eligible to vote for Committees at EWA Annual elections or extraordinary elections the following applies as per EWA Constitution 27.6; “Subject to this Constitution, each Member shall be entitled to vote for each Committee only as nominated by the respective Individual Member at the time of their annual membership renewal.”

Nominations for all elected positions are open from today 21st March, and nominations close 5 pm, 4th April, election 4 pm, 16th May.

Skills ideally required by nominees for the Jumping committee include expertise in Governance, Finance, Communications, Marketing, EWA Officials, coaching and HP programs.
As per the EWA Constitution 31.4, elected members will hold office only until the next Annual Election.

EWA UPDATE REPORT - MARCH 2019

The Equestrian Western Australia EWA Coaching committee supported by Sharon Welsh in charge of the EWA High Performance and Athlete Development held one of their most successful Updates at the State Equestrian Centre in March, which attracted 46 coaches. It was very encouraging to see the number of lapsed coaches who attended with a view to regaining their accreditation. To maintain their EA coaching accreditation, it is necessary for coaches to fulfil a number of Compulsory and Approved activities, including an Update which is required every three years. In 2018 the achievement of the ASADA Level 1 Anti-Doping certificate was included.

The day started with well-respected and arguably the busiest coach in WA, Nadine Merewether one of only two Level 3 General Coaches in WA. The presentation started in the Lecture room, taking those present through the different Stages of Learning from ‘ Unconscious Incompetence’ to ‘ Unconscious Competence’. The coaching exercise then becomes automatic and the activity can then be carried out with a high level of competence. Coaches then moved to the indoor arena where Nadine had built an interesting pattern of poles, and utilised them in instructing a group in improving their horse’s transitions through their position and forward riding aids.

Dr Warwick Vale BSc BVMS (Hons11) focused on the benefits and disadvantages of different arena surfaces, and how the surfaces can have a big impact on the horse’s movements. Wherever possible train on similar surfaces to the competition. He also said that by far the most important factor for performance and soundness is how the horse is trained. Warwick updated coaches on some new research which is being done on how the quality of the rider can influence equine soundness. Warwick also emphasized the importance of horse and rider fitness in preventing unsoundness and injury as well as increasing longevity.

Athlete Pathway Specialist Tracy Vardy from Equestrian Australia, updated those present with RideaHorse.com.au, is a new platform for all riders. There are riding options available for almost everyone, for those wanting to try for the first time, through to those wanting to develop their skills for elite competition or for future work within the equine community. The program includes those who may have a disability, and has a partnership with Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia Limited.

Tracy also talked about the very successful junior program ‘Ready Set Trot’, ‘Ready Set Vault’ and the open program ‘Trot-Canter-Gallop’

The final session covered insurance and was given by Will McArthur from EA’s insurer Gow Gates based in Sydney. This session is mandatory in all coaching Updates, so coaches remain aware of their responsibilities and are informed of any changes in their cover. Some of the topics covered Personal Accidents, Public Products Liability and Professional Indemnity and included cover for coaches travelling to and from EA Affiliated and insured club activities, reasonable reimbursement for costs incurred for equestrian related clothing which may be lost or damaged as a result of an accident.

A lengthy discussion took place on Waivers, and covered the insurance implications of who should sign and when they should be signed, also included was when cover is available to coaches whilst coaching an individual or a group and whether the venue is an EA accredited ground. The EA program does not extend to coaches businesses.

The interest shown by coaches was sustained throughout the Update. We are very fortunate to have many passionate coaches who are committed to improving the standard of riders in WA.

Diane Bennit – Chair EWA Coaching Committee 2019

QUALIFYING REQUIREMENTS FOR 2019 HORSE OF THE YEAR
"Placings in First Ridden classes will not count as a qualifying event as this is not an event held at the National competition"

To qualify for the 2019 EWA Horse of the Year Show, a horse/pony must gain a placing (1st, 2nd or 3rd) in any official show horse class (excluding rider classes) at three (3) separate EWA affiliated events (excluding EWA HOY). These must be judged by a current EA Accredited Show Horse Judge .

The horse’s owner and rider must all be current financial members of EWA and horses must have held either a 2018 or a current 2019 EWA Show Horse Competition License at time of qualifying. E.g for performances from 2018 HOY close of entries to count, competitors must have had a 2018 Competition Licence.  For performances gained in 2019 to count competitors must have a current 2019 Competition Licence at the time of qualifying.

All results should be recorded on the Competition License with the name of the presiding judge shown and submitted with entry to HOTY.

For example – 3rd place lead line pony at Perth H&PC show, 2nd place child’s small pony hack class Riverside Riding Club show, 3rd place open small pony hack class Serpentine H&PC show will make the pony eligible for 2019 Horse of the Year.  Placings in First Ridden classes will not count as a qualifying event as this is not an event held at the National competition.

Ineligible events:

  • Perth Royal Show
  • Show Horse Council WA Classic
  • Show Horse Council WA Western Stars
  • Show Horse Council Horse of the Year
  • Gosnells Masters
  • Any other events not run under EA National Show Horse Rules.

QUALIFYING PERIOD FOR 2019 HORSE OF THE YEAR
IS FROM CLOSE OF ENTRIES 2018 (8th August 2018) until the close of entries 2019 (7th August 2019)

HEIGHT CERTIFICATES
Horses and ponies must hold a current EWA Height Certificate on the day of competition.

ALL LEAD REIN HANDLERS MUST BE A CURRENT EWA FINANCIAL MEMBER AT THE TIME OF COMPETITION.  THEY MAY BE EITHER PARTICIPANT OR COMPETITOR MEMBER.

HANDLER MUST BE 18 YEARS AND OVER.

RIDERS AGE IS OF 1st JANUARY IN YEAR OF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.  ADDITIONALLY,  RIDERS TURNING 5 YEARS ARE ELIGIBLE TO COMPETE THE DAY THEY TURN 5 YEARS OLD. The age of 5 commences from the child's birthday. The Under 8 age limit is taken as per the child's age as at 1st January in the calendar year that the competition is being held.

Judging at HOY is conducted under the EA Preferential Judging System.  Please refer to the EA National Showhorse rules for further details.
