GOVERNOR PERRY SETS THE ELECTION DATE

It took your signature on a petition but the Governor finally set a date for the special election: SATURDAY, JANUARY 26, 2013

We only have 42 days to win this election and send Sylvia to Austin to fight for new jobs, healthcare and public education.

“We have been asking for an election date since day one. Thank you everyone who went to my website www.sylviaforsenate.com and signed the petition. We have a date so lets get to work,” said Garcia.

SYLVIA GARCIA ENDORSED BY SEIU

Houston’s city employees (HOPE) together with janitors, food service and housekeeping workers (SEIU Local 1 Houston) as part of the SEIU Texas State Council endorsed Sylvia Garcia for State Senate.

“Sylvia Garcia has been a strong ally to all working people throughout her entire career. During the janitors’ strike this summer, Sylvia stood for justice and good jobs in Houston. Because many janitors and their families call District 6 home, we strongly endorse Ms. Garcia who has their best interest at heart,” said Elsa Caballero, Director of SEIU Local 1 Texas.

Along with pledging their support, HOPE and SEIU will launch a comprehensive “Get Out the Vote” campaign to elect Sylvia Garcia. Together, HOPE and SEIU will recruit 100 members to volunteer on behalf of Sylvia Garcia.

“Ms. Garcia has always stood up for working Houstonians like us and now it’s time we stood up for her. We organize to create good jobs for our city and we will organize to elect Sylvia Garcia as our next State Senator,” said Melvin Hughes, President of the Houston Organization of Public Employees.

During her time as Harris County Commissioner and beyond, Ms. Garcia has created a reputation as a champion for the most vulnerable citizens in our state. She has been an advocate for immigrants’ rights by opposing discriminatory legislation aiming to divide our state.

NOTE FROM SYLVIA

We now have the date for the special election, Saturday January 26th. This will be very helpful for everyone especially the volunteers as they knock on doors and call voters. It was another big week for our campaign with the endorsement of SEIU and HOPE. I was proud to stand with their leadership as we have many times before and look forward to standing with them in Austin as the next Senator from District 6. Thank you everyone for the hard work so far but we have miles to go before we can rest. See you at the call for action on Saturday.
