UPDATE: The Role of Physicians in the Support of Positive Parenting The Canadian Pediatric Society has released a statement outlining the importance of parental influence on healthy child development and highlights that a secure relationship with at least one healthy adult is essential for the development of optimal coping abilities. Primary care providers can help support parents in the establishment of these relationships. Every physician-family encounter is an opportunity to ask parents about a child’s relationships, behaviour, routines, and overall family function. The statement outlines that clinicians can incorporate the following elements into their regular counselling strategies
The statement which focuses on children aged zero to six, also outlines that a single, positively influential adult in a child's life is the best protection against the outcomes associated with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). These types of relationships are essential for developing resiliency. The Canadian Paediatric Society provides recommendations for vision screening during infant and well-child visits.
