Social Notes from Vice Commodore Dan...

Ahoy Sequoia.

Sue and I had a delightful evening last night learning to dance the West Coast Swing thanks to members Tony Zavilenski and Joan Mersman.  Tony began the evening with a brief history of the dance.  He and Joan then demonstrated their expert form.

We went on to learn the fundamental steps and onward with practice, practice, practice.  We were even assigned homework – practice our steps!  The evening passed very quickly and it was surprisingly tiring – all that having to think and move at the same time!  There are more dates on the calendar so please consider coming on down to the club to participate in the remaining lessons.  Thank you Tony and Joan for sharing your talents!

I also just returned from our latest Wednesday Lunch hosted by Commodore Winston and Carole Bumpus.  It was a great mid day treat and, as always, a good number of members showed up for the wonderful cooking and company.  Future lunches appear on the club calendar.

Okay, we have a busy weekend coming up.  I have been looking at the Jibeset signup sheet for the Barth Race with a bit of trepidation.  Our friends at Coyote Point appear to be turning out their best to battle for bragging rights on this race.   Though our sign-ups are lagging a bit, I am confident we too will field the necessary talent.   Coyote Point Yacht Club has guest dock space available and is hosting a dinner on Friday, September 19th.  We will be racing Saturday from San Mateo to Redwood City.  On Saturday night, Kathy Harris and Larry Mayne will be hosting our Western BBQ Dinner.    We will have live music and great food and fixins, so come on down!   Cost is $ 20.00.  Please sign up on line or at the club.

On Saturday September 20th Sequoia will again be participating in Coastal Cleanup Day.  Our effort, lead by Commodore Winston will begin at 9:30 Saturday morning.  Coffee and snacks will be served as well as lunch.   Please come and help pick up debris within our marina and along our shoreline.

September 27th is Oktoberfest at Sequoia.  This is one of our more popular events and this year it will be hosted by Helen Horn.

Finally, please put the Redwood City Port Fest on your calendar for October 4th!  We will be needing volunteers for our drink booths.  The Port is also looking for helpers.  Also, the float will be making an encore appearance – due to popular demand!

See you around the club.

CALLING ALL SEQUOIA RACERS!

The Barth Race is THIS Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 13:00.

It is that time again to defend our beloved Barth Race trophy, the Dewitt print that hangs in our dining room. Coyote Point Yacht Club has five boats signed up already. Currently, SYC has two boats signed up (any club competing needs a minimum of 5 boats).

This is a team race so participation is key. The combined scores of both Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker divisions will be used to determine the winner. So regardless if you fly a kite or not we need you in this race!

Sailing instructions are posted here.

Registration is through Jibeset here.

If you prefer paper registration click here. Please complete and email to Jeff Phillips.

You can check in by hailing the race committee up to 12:50 at the start on Channel 71. Spinnaker starts at 13:00 and Non-Spinnaker starts at 13:10. Start is off Z mark near Coyote Point.

The Barth Race finish is in Redwood Creek with a western BBQ with live music to follow the race.

Fall Junior Sailing In Full Swing

Junior Sailing classes began September 6th and are in full swing (see calendar in sidebar for dates).

Disclaimer: If it's too windy or rainy to sail safely, class may be rescheduled to another Saturday. Parents should not assume class will be cancelled because weather is bad at your house. Our staff makes the determination at the Launch Ramp at 9:00 a.m.the day of the class!

SYC's Junior Sailing was the recipient of the 2012 Garrett Horder Memorial Trophy for best sailing program on the West Coast. Our outstanding staff trains youngsters, ages 9-14, in boat handling and safety on El Toros and Lasers. Training is provided for Beginner, Intermediate and Adavanced levels. SYC is deeply proud of all its students who have gone on to compete in regional, national and international racing regattas.

Winter classes will begin January 31st.

Coastal Cleanup Day this Saturday

Every year, on the third Saturday in September, people join together at sites all over California to take part in the State's largest volunteer event, California Coastal Cleanup Day. This will be Sequoia Yacht Club’s 4th year for participating in this great event.  Last year, over 58,000 volunteers removed almost 750,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from California's beaches, lakes, and waterways. Families, friends, coworkers, scout troops, school groups, service clubs, and individuals came together to celebrate, clean and share their appreciation of California's fabulous coast and waterways. This event is part of the International Coastal Cleanup organized by the Ocean Conservancy, which is the largest volunteer event on the planet!

Three years ago, Sequoia Yacht Club helped to pilot a program to enlist yacht clubs around California to engage in this event and the number of yacht clubs and yacht club members have increased in participation every year.

This Saturday, September 20th, we will start at 9am and will meet for registration and a safety briefing in front of the Club. It should only be a couple of hours and we plan to be done before noon. We will serve coffee, water and donuts and will have available gloves, buckets and grabbers for your convenience.  But please feel free to bring your own buckets, gloves and tools. Also if you would like to do on-the-water cleanup, bring your dinghy and/or kayaks. Also be sure to dress with appropriate shoes/boots and clothing. We will have gifts and prizes for the person and/or group who extracts the most trash and the most unusual trash.

Lunch will be provided following the event, so come one and all.  Help clean up our own shores.

Please let me know if you will be coming so we can plan food and equipment by emailing me at sycwin@gmail.com or calling me at 650-587-9003.

This is a great event for the entire family and I look forward to seeing you all there on Saturday,

Class Act Christening

Some photos from the boat christening of Olivia Sadlowski's new boat, Donna Summer. Every boat needs a mirror ball, this one has it. This was before the membership meeting on September 12, 2014.

Bubbly, of course!

Quite a turn out...

Commodore Winston reads the blessing.

Donna Summer gets her disco ball.

Commodore's Cup Photos

Here's a bevy of photo ops from your favorite Commodore, Winston. With all that posing it's a wonder anyone finished in the time allotted!

Really Winston? A selfie for the Commodore's Cup? (Note there's no one ahead of him).

Oops! That's what happens when you stop to take pictures...

Some nice boats out there...

Classic lines...

Appropriate that a Commodore-to-be would be out in front.

Racing in a shipping channel has its challenges. Kind of like the game "Frogger" on the water.
