Hutt Valley CareerFest 2024 – Biggest and best ever
We made it the Hutt Valley’s biggest careers day ever. 17 schools, 1,700 people, 2 Ministers, 2 Mayors, 90 businesses, and over 300 packed lunches. It was not a small undertaking to organise this years Hutt Valley CareerFest. But thanks to the amazing Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce team of Annette Wasson, Megan Kibblewhite, Fiona Mawley and Casey Morton we got there, and it was a huge success, with over 1,700 people in attendance.
The 17 schools from across the region sent some students to discover, explore and connect to over 90 business stands. Minister Bishop and Minister Upston dropped in for a visit and talked to many of the businesses.

Innovating to reduce manufacturing emissions
Small Business and Manufacturing Minister Andrew Bayly and Climate Change Minister Simon Watts have launched a new set of tools designed to help manufacturers grow their businesses while reducing emissions.
“Manufacturing is a sleeping giant for New Zealand’s economy; with the right tools and support, manufacturing has the potential to supercharge our economic growth,” Mr. Bayly says. The sector accounts for 10% of GDP, 60% of exports, and employs 230,000 people. It is also a major driver of innovation, contributing a quarter of all business-led research and development in New Zealand.
With increasing global demand for low-carbon manufactured products, New Zealand manufacturers are well-positioned to leverage their strong green reputation and access to relatively low-carbon electricity. The new tools include an online climate action toolbox featuring an emissions calculator, tailored plans, and practical advice. Additionally, a report and dataset mapping the sector’s emissions and waste patterns have been launched to help businesses make informed decisions and identify opportunities for innovation.
This initiative is part of the Government’s Climate Strategy, which aims to support the manufacturing sector in meeting New Zealand’s climate change targets while fostering economic growth and productivity through technology and innovation.
Thousands more young people to get job coaching
The coalition Government is investing an additional $9.45 million to expand job coaching and support for young job seekers. This funding will increase places in community-led employment programmes from 5,400 to 7,500, helping young people access education, training, and employment opportunities.
Social Development and Employment Minister Louise Upston highlights that the new funding will provide:
- 500 places with He Poutama Rangatahi providers for 18-24-year-olds on Jobseeker Support for over a year
- 1,600 places with regional providers for 18-24-year-olds on Jobseeker Support for any period
The initiative aims to better support young people and reduce long-term reliance on benefits, with future considerations for bonus payments based on sustained employment. This effort complements a new phone-based case management service for 4,000 under-25s, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to improving youth employment pathways.
Promised cost of living relief is here
The Government has fulfilled its promise with new tax relief measures effective from today, says Finance Minister Nicola Willis.
“This tax relief means Kiwi families can keep more of their hard-earned money for essential expenses like children’s needs, groceries, and bills,” Nicola Willis says.
Key updates include:
- Personal Income Tax Thresholds: Raised from $14,000 to $15,600; $48,000 to $53,500; and $70,000 to $78,100.
- In-Work Tax Credit: Increased by up to $50 a fortnight for low-to-middle income working families with children.
- Independent Earner Tax Credit: Eligibility extended to those earning up to $70,000 a year.
Additionally, the FamilyBoost payment, offering up to $150 a fortnight for early childhood education fees, was introduced on July 1.
727,000 households will see at least $75 a fortnight, with 187,000 receiving at least $100. On average, households will benefit by $60 a fortnight, and those with children by $78.

Hutt City Council have launched a new programme to support consumer-facing businesses build skills to counter increased crime and anti-social behaviour.
The Kia Haumaru – Safer Centres Programme was developed in partnership with First Retail Group Ltd and the New Zealand Police to enhance the wellbeing and safety of consumer-facing staff and the public across our city.

Seaview Business News
Improving Performance and Odour Management at Seaview Wastewater Treatment Plant
Over the next two to three months, Wellington Water are undertaking work at the plant to improve its performance and odour management. This is being done in three areas of the plant that may cause some intermittent odour outside the Seaview Wastewater Treatment Plant boundary while the work is underway.
- Primary sedimentation tanks mechanical renewal (underway)
- Biofilter air distribution system renewal (coming up)
- Dryer mechanical refurbishment (timing to be confirmed)
Wellington Water have scheduled these works to overlap to minimise the time the community may notice an impact. We’re also doing this work when the weather is cooler because there’s generally less odour in the colder months. We will be using the odour neutraliser to minimise offensive odour and will be monitoring the odour beyond the plant.
Wellington Water ask for your patience with any short-term increase in odour while we make these long-term improvements to the plant.

Panasonic joins Blue Mountains Campus in new office suite offering
Panasonic has chosen Blue Mountains Campus as the new home for its regional team, leasing one of the campus’ new office suites, which cater to smaller teams looking for high quality office space.
Ros Luxford from Willis Bond, the developer of the campus, shared, “Panasonic’s inquiry was the catalyst for launching our new office suite product. Their feedback reinforced the need for quality smaller office spaces in the area, and we are thrilled to welcome them.”

Celebrating Success
It was congratulations all round as Mexted Sports Turf’s groundsmen were recognised in the 2024 Cricket Wellington Ground of the Year awards.
Hutt Recreation Ground, which is lovingly managed by veteran groundsman Kevin Wakefield, was voted Ground of the Year by Wellington cricket captains, who score the pitches each week throughout the season.
Kevin has 47 years as a groundsman in the Hutt Valley and Wainuiomata under his belt, and his passion and commitment have not only seen him create exceptional playing surfaces season after season, but he’s also passing on his knowledge to Mexteds’ younger groundsmen.
Mexteds’ Fraser Park, Petone Recreation Ground and Barton Oval groundsmen also deserve a mention, as their parks were also ranked in the top five Cricket Wellington venues this year. Congratulations to Ben Trethewey, John McKessar and Campbell Webster.
Since these awards, Campbell has taken up a new role at NZCIS - still keeping turf looking beautiful in the Hutt Valley!
