Tuesday 2 March 2021 Welcome to City of Wanneroo's Lagoon Lowdown newsletterWelcome to the first issue of the City of Wanneroo’s Yanchep Lagoon e-newsletter, The Lagoon Lowdown. This e-newsletter has been developed to keep the Yanchep and Two Rocks communities informed on the implementation of the Yanchep Lagoon Master Plan, including key initiatives and interesting bits of information for your community. The Master Plan was developed by the City of Wanneroo, with Placemaking consultants RobertsDay, following an extensive collaborative community engagement process. The Yanchep Lagoon Community Working Group - which was established in late 2019 following an expression of interest process - is helping the City implement the strategic blueprint and be true to the 'place vision' for the precinct. Working group membership comprises the Mayor, Ward Councilors, local community representatives and business owners. They are initially focusing on short-term improvements that can be implemented, in advance of the normal planning and approval process (which can often take several years to navigate) to help make the Lagoon a better place for locals and visitors alike. Updates on both long-term and short-term projects will be featured in this quarterly e-newsletter. You will also have opportunities to provide feedback and get involved in projects as they are developed. The larger projects will be advertised in the City’s Your Say community engagement hub (as individual projects), but linked to the main Yanchep Lagoon Master Plan webpage. Food truck maniaThe food truck events at Yanchep Lagoon are proving very popular this summer, with hundreds of locals already attending these events. The City is working with the Yanchep Surf Life Saving Club and organisers to set up the food trucks in the surf club forecourt every second Sunday through to March 2021. The aim is to give residents and visitors the opportunity to gather in parks and community spaces, while enjoying a range of culinary delights. The program is run by independent operators and the next event at Yanchep is scheduled for this Sunday 7 March. Word travels fast – so tell your friends and family to come along and support this initiative, before it ends later this month. Setting sail for the shadeA large shade sail has recently been installed at the Lagoon – over the Orion Café playground – for patrons and their children to play safely out of the hot sun. This was in direct response to community feedback received during the masterplanning process. The City also plans to erect an additional shade sail over the south-western side of the Yanchep Surf Club forecourt. The aim is to create a lovely shady spot where members and the public can buy snacks and drinks on club days out of the direct sun. Down the track, the area could have tables and chairs to encourage more people to stay longer, relax and enjoy the view. A selection of extremely hardy and shady trees are also being planted around the surf club forecourt and surrounding landscaped areas. Over the next few months you should start to see some beautiful, large trees being planted for you to enjoy. Staying with the surf club forecourt, the City is also exploring options for some better seating options for people visiting the Lagoon, and you’ll start to see this happening in this space very soon. For more info, email Project Officer Karen Godridge. Photo: The new shade sail at Orion Café. Capricorn Esplanade parkingTo encourage visitors to the Lagoon to park in safer locations, the City has constructed crushed limestone bays along Capricorn Esplanade. We encourage people to use this space, rather than parking illegally around the roundabout or along the Brazier Road entrance road. Down the track, the City will look to formalise this area once project planning and design has been undertaken. We are currently exploring all the options for new traffic management arrangements to improve safety and to make visiting the Yanchep Lagoon an even more pleasurable experience.
