Dear families,

Late last term, parents of children in Kindergarten to Year 3 classes, were invited to participate in Regent College’s annual survey on the National Quality Standards (NQS).

Just under half of the families responded to the invitation to complete the survey and the feedback received will assist in developing this year’s Quality Improvement Plan.

Overall, parents were happy with their experience of Regent College’s early years’ program and would have no hesitation to recommend it to others with almost 98% of parents indicating the teaching and learning programs were both stimulating and engaging.

While safety wasn’t an issue for families, it was noted that our outdoors physical environment could do with a facelift making it more appealing and challenging to the students.

A big thank you to all the families who took the time to complete the survey.

Mrs Jacqueline Quinlivan. Deputy Principal.

STUDENT FREE DAY Families, please note that the College has included a final professional learning date for staff in Term 4. The final student free day for this year will be on Friday 28th October (Week 3) Term 4.

KINDERGARTEN 1 What a beautiful day for a farm visit. Last Monday, students and parents from Kindergarten 1 spent a wonderful day at the farm. With so many things to see and do we all came back exhausted. We want to thank all of the lovely parents who came along to help. Our day included plenty of cuddles, as one child remarked, ”Ah, that’s why it’s called the cuddly animal farm!” Throughout the day the children got to feed animals, ride a tractor train, have a ride on the carousel, bounce on the bouncy castle and don’t forget the fabulous bus ride. Definitely a day to be remembered. Mrs Huxley

KINDERGARTEN 2 Kindergarten 2 enjoyed a fantastic start to Term 3. The students returned to school feeling refreshed and were greeted by very exciting farm theme activities in preparation for their farm excursion. They practiced hard with their writing and had fun with some farm sensory play activities.

At the Swan Valley Cuddly Animal Farm, the students had the opportunity of feeding many different animals, bottle fed baby goats and even milked a goat! The children had a wonderful, rich and meaningful experience! Mrs Balakrishnan

PRE-PRIMARY In Pre-primary we are well into our classroom topic of ‘The Olympics Around The World’! We arrived on the first day and were presented with our boarding pass and a registration number for our Olympic adventure! We have been enjoying learning about the Olympics and different countries, their culture, language and their environment. We got to make sushi and it was delicious! We also designed and built Greek buildings out of clay – it was messy but lots of fun. We are excited to see what countries we will be learning about in the next few weeks. Mrs Stein and Miss Baker

YEAR 1 Wednesday 27th July was our 100th day of school this year. It was very exciting reaching 100 because we have been counting each school day since the very first day this year! The Year 1s celebrated in style, making and wearing glasses shaped as 100. We worked together to count collections showing what 100 looks like in many different ways, and soon realised it was easier to count in groups of 10. In the morning, we enjoyed making cookies shaped as the number 100 (we even used hundreds and thousands!). At the end of the day we took them home in a packet that said ‘I am one smart cookie!' Some of us thought that after 100 days we were going to Year 2, but we’re glad we get to enjoy a bit more time in Year 1 before we leave. We’re looking forward to the next 100 days… we wonder if we will reach 200? Miss Jongeling and Miss Shaw

CLASS 2.1 In the pictured activity, students worked in small groups to view a map of France. Next they had to try and redraw the outline of France on a piece of paper without looking at the map. They could look at the map again and each student had a turn at drawing. Next the students had to write the main cities on their map. Students could write the oceans or surrounding countries. Finally, students looked at the Map of France and marked their own work. On average, the students were able to locate and redraw accurately 12 places. The students gave positive and negative feedback and we discussed how it is important to be challenged in our learning. Mrs Jenkins

YEAR 2 SCIENCE Thank you to all the Year 2 parents for providing the corn flour for our 'all mixed up' Science lesson. The students thoroughly enjoyed mixing the corn flour and water together to make Oobleck. Yes, the students' clothes did get a little dirty but it was well worth it. Once student exclaimed, "This is the best day of my life!" Another student said, "This is so much fun. My mum would never let me do this inside the house or even outside!" The purpose of the activity was to discover what would happen when you mix water with corn flour. The students described Oobleck as gooey, runny, soft, lumpy, hard, silky, waxy, slimy, thick, squishy and rubbery. It looked like glue, condensed milk and concrete. Mrs Jenkins and Mr Nicholls

CLASS 2/3 Last Tuesday our class used their student SmartRider cards to catch the bus into the city to visit the Fire Brigade Museum.  Students learnt about the importance of having a family fire escape plan and a safe meeting place. Students role played how to escape safely by crawling "down low and go, go, go!" Students compared a modern and an olden day fire truck on display and dressed in safety gear to explore how the firemen stay safe in fire emergencies. Thank you to our wonderful parent helpers on the day. Mrs Wilkinson

YEAR 3 SCIENCE In Science the Year 3 students conducted an investigation to discover why we have days nights, years and seasons. They used a torch to represent the Sun and a foam ball as the Earth.  Students rotated the Earth on its axis using a skewer. When the light shines on the modelling clay it is daytime where we live. Students role played how the Earth spins and rotates once around the Sun each year. Why do we have four seasons? Mrs Wilkinson

CLASS 3.1 Let the Games begin! Recently we have been learning about the Ancient and Modern Games and some facts about Brazil, the host country for 2016. We would like to especially thank Mrs Baird for making our Olympic ID tags for our special school opening Olympic ceremony. In the photographs, some students can be seen proudly displaying the flags of our class country - Great Britain! Finally, we have been watching clips of the various sports being played at the Olympics. Badminton is one of our favourites! Mrs Innes

CLASS 4.1 Class 4.1 have been getting into the spirit of the Olympics with their mascot designs and Australian flag colouring.  They’ve also been measuring things this past week to discover how big a shape is when it measures one square metre, even when it’s not a regular square shape. Mrs Johnston

CLASS 5/6 This past week the Year 5 and 6 students have been busy designing and building their mascot for the Regent College Olympic opening ceremony. Mr Tracy

Benvenuto Mattia! (Welcome Mattia!) Regent College is fortunate to have Mr Mattia Berti, a short-term Italian assistant to our Languages Education Program. The WA Italian Teachers Association have a program where University Graduates from Italy can come to WA and be an assistant to Italian teachers for a term. Teachers and students benefit by having  native speakers with the latest on language and culture and they benefit by improving their English and learning about our Australian culture. If you see Mattia, please say 'G'day!' Signora Kerrigan

CHESS CHAMPIONS Four students (pictured) recently concluded Term 2 fixtures by winning the Chess Association of Western Australia (CAWA) school league grand finalists competition. The boys are to be congratulated for their team work, persistence, and humility; they represented the College very well and should feel proud of their achievement. Thank you to Mr Tracy for coordinating the College's involvement.

AFTER SCHOOL CARE This term in After School Care (ASC) we're stepping back in time to look at famous events, civilisations, inventions and people throughout history. Last week we sailed back to the days of buccaneers and made pirate hats and patches.

We also learnt how to make lemonade the good old fashioned way. We squeezed our own lemon juice and loved watching the fizzing chemical reaction when bi-carb soda was added to our drink! Mrs Wyatt

CANTEEN The College Canteen participated in the opening to the Olympic theme with some fun food labelling.

QUIZ NIGHT. Thank to the families who recently attended the College family Quiz Night, held in the upstairs hall. It was great fun! Thank you to the College P&F for coordinating the occasion.
