BERL Monthly Monitor - Budget Watch

This year’s Budget has all the hallmarks of one ‘treading water’. There will be strenuous efforts expended to make it look like something is being done; but, without the will to wish to do anything.

With the accounts showing a borderline surplus (or deficit), the chances of any significant tax relief will remain on the backburner. Read more here.

Deal opens passage for flights to India

Wellington to host inaugural Māori language parade

Wellington will host Aotearoa's very first Māori language parade on 4 July.

Te Taura Whiri i Te Reo Māori is rallying together thousands of people to take part in the event which will kick off this year's Māori Language Week campaign.

Commission Chief Executive Ngahiwi Apanui says, “We are taking te reo Māori to the streets and making it visible in places and spaces where it isn’t. Every New Zealander has a role to play in the revitalisation of te reo and we want to involve Māori and non- Māori in the biggest celebration of te reo that our country has ever put on.”  Read more here.

Aussie backpacker tax set to drive visitors to NZ

Backpackers Downunder will travel to New Zealand to work instead of Australia after the government kept the backpacker tax in its budget, the tourism industry has warned. The sector is bitterly disappointed the Turnbull government has upheld the hefty income tax for people on working holidays.

"This budget locks in a tax that will deliver a negative result for Australia's tourism industry and which will drive our backpacker visitors into the arms of our New Zealand competitors," Australian Tourism Export Council managing director Peter Shelley said on Tuesday. Read more here.

You are all doing ... well, not that brilliantly actually

The Prime Minister just announced that an elite international sales team is booking its tickets to New Zealand. They're, no doubt, expecting good tourism fun and will be indulging in a bit of retail therapy.

I just hope it's better than the shopping experiences I've had recently.

The 10,000 sales specialists are from Amway in China and will be descending on Queenstown in waves of 500 people, in five-day visits over four months in 2018.

The agencies who pulled this off all talked about the huge benefits it will bring New Zealand which there may be. But it is also a risk if we don't deliver. Read more here.
