2. WORKSHOP: "New trends and challenges in the mathematics of optimal design"

From 10-14 June 2019 the Institute will be hosting "New trends and challenges in the mathematics of optimal design", the fourth workshop of the "Mathematical design of new materials" (DNM, pictured above) programme. There is now less than two weeks to go until the registration deadline. We would urge all interested parties to put forward their application as soon as possible.

A direct link to the application form, a workshop abstract and a list of confirmed speakers follow below.

The optimal design of structures and materials has recently undergone a burst of activity due to simultaneous progress in methods for the manufacture of new materials and their design, such as the development of additive manufacturing and of mathematical methods for topology optimization. The  workshop will present the most recent results and challenges in this area and provide an exchange forum for mathematicians, scientists and engineers interested in various applications, having in common the need for optimizing designs, in particular their material properties, shapes and topologies.

3. GALLERY: John Kinsella's "Spiralling" poetry talk in pictures

On Tuesday 22 January, INI was delighted to host poet-in-residence John Kinsella for an evening of readings and conversation around his work "Spiralling".

John delivered a talk of unique energy and interest, filled with insight not only into the origins of each piece, but into the subjects which they concerned - ranging from the mathematical essences of staircases and tree stumps to the swirling dust devils of the Western Australian outback.

The team at INI would, as always, like to thank John for his creative passion, and would like to extend further thanks to all the members of the University and public whose attendance helped make the evening such a special occasion.

4. REPORT: outcomes from Correspondents Day meeting 2019

On Wednesday 30 January 2019 the annual meeting of the INI-ICMS Correspondents Network was held at ICMS in Edinburgh.

This regular conference provides an important opportunity for the Institute and ICMS to interact with its nationwide network of contacts across mathematics faculties and other higher education centres, to share feedback on and work towards improving our working practices, and thus to better extend the reach and impact of everything undertaken at both institutions.

5. VIDEO: MES co-organiser Professor Almut Veraart on childcare support at INI

A co-organiser of the four-month MES programme, Professor Almut Veraart (Imperial) is also the mother of two pre-school children. In this recent video she discusses her experience of applying for and receiving childcare funding during her time at INI.

0:00: Introduction
0:25: Tell us about the process of applying for childcare funding
2:17: Would you have been able to attend without this support?
3:22: How has the relocation affected your children and your work?
5:23: What advice would you give to those thinking of applying for childcare support?
