DEMOCRACY IS WAITING ON GOVERNOR PERRY

Under Texas law, Governor Perry had 16 days to canvass the state vote starting November 21, 2012.  He waited until the last day. After the canvass Governor Perry could take up to 20 days to call the special election for Senate District 6. The Sylvia for Senate campaign has started a petition urging the Governor to not wait until the last moment again but to call this election now.

The petition at www.sylviaforsenate.com has only been up for two days but over 200 people have signed demanding that the families of Senate District 6 have representation in Austin.  “ Why is the Governor dragging his feet? The legislature starts on January 8th. Senators are already pre- filing bills that are important to their districts and Senate District 6 seat sits empty,” said Garcia.

“Governor Perry slashed hundreds of billions of dollars from public education and refuses federal dollars for healthcare. Unless Governor Perry calls the election right away we could be without a state senator for months who will fight for healthcare and restoring our public education dollars,” said Garcia.

Be sure to read Patricia Kilday Hart’s column in today’s Houston Chronicle, Perry's delay keeps Houston Senate district vacant, speaking directly to our call to action.

SYLVIA GARCIA HONORED FOR SHAPING TEXAS HISTORY

Today, Sylvia Garcia is being honored by the Bullock Texas State History Museum at a luncheon celebrating Women Who are Shaping Texas in the 20th century. “I am honored that the Bullock Museum has included me in their exhibit recognizing many of the Texas Women who have stepped up to fight for equality and fairness in Texas. I am humbled to be standing with former Houston Mayor Kathy Whitmire, Representative Senfronia Thompson, Evelyn Thornton and basketball superstar Sheryl Swoopes, all of Houston, in receiving this honor. I am particularly proud that Mayor Whitmire who appointed me as chief municipal judge launching my career as a public servant, is here as we are honored together,” said Garcia.

NOTE FROM SYLVIA

Friends and supporters, the Governor has canvassed the vote and sometime in the next 20 days we will know when the special election will be held. I need you on the ground fighting hard for every vote in this election. Do not be fooled by misleading information and numbers. This race is ours to win. I have represented over 75% of SD6 as a fiscally responsible controller and a fighter for families on commissioners court.

On the trail this week, a briefing on Pre-K education brought me to the Armandia G. Farias Pre-K center named after my aunt. I was greeted by their Tiger cheerleaders and reminded of why we are in this race. It is about our families and our children’s future.

Please come to our headquarters this weekend and join me in block walking and calling our neighbors for their support and help. Thank you and see you on the campaign trial.
