Struggling to earn a living as a farmer in Cambodia, Phany was forced to leave her daughter behind in the village to take up construction work in the city. Thankfully, through a Caritas funded program, Phany learnt new farming techniques which enabled her to get a better yield from her vegetable crops and to conserve water in her drought-stricken region. Phany’s community also took part in training in health, nutrition, hygiene and disaster preparedness, arming them with better strategies to cope with environmental changes. Watch a short film about Phany’s story. Let’s Go Further, Together! JPC is committed to keeping our community safe and we will continue to keep you updated with any changes that affect our students' health or attendance as soon as they occur. The safety and wellbeing of all students, staff and the school community is our priority. Therefore we ask that any student who is unwell to be kept at home. If a student presents with cold or flu-like symptoms at school, they will be isolated and parents/carers will be required to collect them immediately. Many thanks for your understanding in the matter. Stephanie O'Meara Principal In and Around JPCPAT TestingAs part of Catholic Education-mandated data collection for literacy and numeracy, all Year 9 and Year 10 students will sit PAT (Progressive Achievement Tests) during ILT in Week 7. These tests are designed to provide objective, norm-referenced information to teachers about their students’ skills and understandings in a range of key areas. The data allows us to track student growth, identify areas of strength, and see areas where students may need further support. All Year 9 and Year 10 students will complete PAT Maths and PAT Reading Comprehension. Each of the tests takes about 40mins. The students do not receive individualised results from these tests, and the results are not used as part of the students’ assessment for school reports. Students in Year 8 who are new to JPC, and students in Year 7 who did not attend a CE primary school for Year 6, will sit the tests during ILT in Week 8. Kate MacGregor LLWB – Literacy and Numeracy Welcome to our New Youth MinistersNick Barry and Caitlyn D'Cruze!Nick BarryI’m Nick Barry, and I’m one of the new CSYMA youth ministers at JPC. I’m also studying the third year of my Music degree at ANU. I graduated from St Francis Xavier College in 2017 and was involved in the school’s youth ministry team during years 10 to 12. I was raised a Catholic, and always enjoyed learning about God through church and school. Part of my role involves working with the Youth Ministry Team, assisting with the Year 10 Youth Ministry Elective class, and helping to foster the religious life of the school. I’m really keen to share my experience of Catholicism with the JPC community and to help students to know the importance of the faith in their lives. Caitlyn D'CruzeHi, I’m Caitlyn D'Cruze – I am looking forward to working at JPC as one of the new youth ministers!! I’m studying Psychology and Global Studies at UC. I was born in Pakistan and moved here in 2015. It was when I moved here that inspired me to join the ministry as I was once just like most teenagers, confused and questioning if this is all true or a figment of my imagination. And through a wonderful youth minister whom I met at a retreat, my ideals and morals were changed and thus I started my journey with Christ, the Church and the Clergy. This made me fall in love with how much God loves me through it all. Over the years I’ve met so many people who’ve made me grow and understand our faith, hence I would like to share this experience with you. Thrilled to work with you beautiful people and grow with love. Praying that we as a community can kick-start the new evangelisation of the church. Vivir, Reír y Amar. Siempre. ( Live, Laugh and Love. Always – in Spanish!) Arts Up FrontDramaJPC has a thriving Drama department. Not only are there classes offered to all year groups at the College, but these classes also allow for students to participate in experiential learning. Consequently, this means that our lessons are active, creative and surprising – for students and teachers! Year 7 are offered a taster of Drama as a term elective. In this, they are able to explore the core skills required of actors and develop a more confident approach to performance. Students are currently creating a unique piece of theatre, applying the movement theories of Rudolf von Laban. The 9/10 Elective Drama class are studying a topic titled, “The World of Theatre.” This topic offers opportunities for students investigate unique styles of theatre history. They lead their investigation and become the expert of this style, presenting a workshop to the class based on their learning. Through this, students develop their literacy skills in the areas of research and interpretation and their creative and critical thinking skills. No learning in Drama is passive – we are always moving and pushing the boundaries. Our Year 11 and 12 Drama students have been examining different voice and movement theories. This unit of study challenges students to move beyond realism and consider different approaches for performance pushing the boundaries, moving into a surreal concept of performance. Students are preparing two versions of a monologue; one which highlights their creative use of voice, and the latter displaying their exploration of movement theories. This semester, Drama students will continue to extend upon their performance ability and challenge their understanding of what performance actually means. Chookas to all JPC Drama students. Mrs Sarah Smith Drama teacher SportRowing AchievementOlenka Moran from year 10 has been selected to represent the ACT at Nationals for Rowing. She will be competing at the Sydney International Regatta Centre at the end of March 2020. We wish her all the very best! Defence

The van stock is incredibly low at the moment and they have had to turn many people away who have come recently to the van looking for a jacket/jumper to keep themselves warm. If you have a jacket or jumper that you can donate, please give them to Mrs Teena Zorzi in the Drexel area - Thank You |
