Introduction to Mindfulness Coming This Friday as Part of Mind, Body, Soul Theme at BESIn celebrating our Mind, Body, Soul theme, this Friday our students will experience an Introduction to Mindfulness taught by Ms. Kim Kelly of Playful Minds. Information about Ms. Kelly and her exceptional qualifications may be found at www.playful-minds.com. Mindfulness can be defined as paying attention to what is happening right here, right now, with kindness and curiosity. In this first lesson, students will learn what mindfulness encompasses and some basic information about their brains. They'll learn how the amygdala (fight/fight/freeze response center) works, and that emotions come and go. They'll also learn how to anchor their attention on their breath to calm the amygdala and get back into the problem solving center of their brain (the pre-frontal cortex). Students will brainstorm situations that falsely illicit the fight/flight/ or freeze response and discuss how breathing and other techniques can have a calming effect. Sponsorship dollars for BES events will be designated for the BES campus as always, but sponsors will be able to gain exposure to the entire Episcopal School of Jacksonville community if they wish.
